Dominican Republic asks IDB US$145M to reforest river basins

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic hasrequested US$145 million in funding fromthe Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for several sustainable communitydevelopment projects to recover rescue and protect watersheds ravaged by deforestation,and bolstering agro production to create thousands of jobs.

Presidency administrative minister Jose RamonPeralta presented the project on Friday, which seeks to reduce poverty through qualityjobs and also eradicate small l plot and subsistence farming.

Accompanied by several senior officials,Peralta presented the funding request to an IDB commission headed by FloraMontealegre.

The projects, Peralta says, some of which arealready underway, will positively impact low income people of La Vega, San Joséde Ocoa, San Juan and Barahona provinces.

Among the projects the Government has alreadyinitiated figure the reforestation and sustainable development in Sabaneta (west)township, the village Hondo Valle, both in Elias Piña province; and a third inBarahona (southwest).

In agricultural the project aims to support coffeeand avocado production, which seeks to reforest river basins and generateincome, in addition to beekeeping and fish farming.

Among the river basins which the protect setsout to protect figure Yaque del Sur, Paraiso, San Juan, Macacía and Artibonite,under labor intensive reforestation.

Funds are there

After affirming the IDB’s willingness to fundthe projects Montealegre said its only condition is that local matching fundsare guaranteed, to which Peralta responded, "no problem, because there isa profound political will on the part of the head of state."
