RE: Dominicans living in Europe/ Dominicanos viviendo en Europa
I think Latinos are doing a fantastic job integrating in the US. Second generation Latinos may be more comfortable with Spanish, but most can hold down jobs and communicate just fine as long as the English speaker is not a stuck up jerk. Third generation latinos integrate in various manners. Some Latinos do integrate into mainstream 'white' American culture...many make the choice to integrate more into the urban/black experience. Many others have carved out a whole space that can be truly called Latino-American; not just US culture, not just the culture of wherever their parents are from, but very local and unique bi-lingual culture. The issue is that there is always an influx of fresh immigrants who only speak Spanish...but that is no problem as long as this mediating, naturalized Latino class is also growing via their Americanized offspring.

It is called the Vondel Park. It is beautiful. Amsterdam is a lovely city, I have lived in Paris, Brussels and Rotterdam, but the atmosphere of Amsterdam is unmatched. Soft drugs' acceptance (read: marijuana) policy is really not a big issue here. If you don't involve in that world, you generally don't really bump into it in public spaces or anything and when it does occur, it is an insignificant event.

New York state used to be a Dutch Colony, which the Dutch passed on to the English in exchange for Suriname (South America). The names of NYC boroughs Brooklyn and Harlem come from the Dutch villages of Breukelen and Haarlem respectively.

Yes indeed the Dutch have definitely left its impact on NYC. Loco, tu haz vivido en muchos paises. Sabes mucho idiomas? Cual pais te gusta mas? Cual idioma fue lo mas dificil a aprender?

RE: Dominicans living in Europe/ Dominicanos viviendo en Europa
Hi,

I am a Dominican woman married to a Dutch man, living in the United States. I do not consider myself as a Dominican who only wants to get with Dominicans, who only wants to eat Dominican food...I do agreed with you in a lot of things, but not every Dominican just wants to go back to DR. I like my country and my husband love it! but I don't think I will bring my kids to live there.

My kids are 8 and 9 and I am planning to move to Holland because I love europe. I have been there many times and I believe my boys will interact and will get a very good education over there. I am concerned with what you mentioned about school. My kids are bilingual (English - Spanish) and I would love they speak Dutch as their dad. One thing for sure is that I am not bringing my family to Holland just to interact with Dominicans, in that case, Washington Heights is full of Dominicans. I do want my kids to go to school there, but I am not so sure regards of different levels of education as you mentioned. I will have to search better and get informed before I make any decision. Thanks

Here's what i've seen with my own eyes... Black hispanics are falling in with the blacks... White hispanics are staying away from the blacks and intergrating more with the white... Soon hispanics will be divided into two camps and each group of hispanics will melt with the dominant group, whether black or white until there's no such thing as hispanics... Thats the American way!!!

I can't say I've seen the same as Franco, at least not in northeast US. There's a large middle segment of second, third generation of Dominican descent to whom neither description of 'falling in with' applies. This is very visible in NYC, and a few other small cities in the Northeast where I've met Dominicans. Dominicans I meet in my generation very easily navigate amongst elements and individuals of both groups. Of course there are some Dominicans who, either because of their physical phenotype or other reason, do seem to neatly integrate into one of those groups. Also the black/white dichotomy will before long give way to economics and demographics...there is a very clear third culture growing , domestic Latino-dom, being promoted from the halls of academia to the corridors of corporate America. This is where I'd place most Dominicans I meet who as I said are not clearly defining themselves as either back or white.

Guys am not making this up... Even in films, white hispanic actors are given identities as white... and not as white hispanics... The divisions of Black and White will remain without a third column...

P.S. I know alot of educated Hispanics... Most of them white... They do very well in white circles and neighborhoods....

No offense to anyone, but it is what it is...

Carlos, can you tell me where these white hispanics are integrating with white americans? you mean integrating with some trailer trash white folks from kentucky and west virginia, perhaps? why don't you tell me how much " integration" they are doing over at Martha's Vineyard and Bridgehampton? think hispanics are running all over Nantucket ? get real! i suspect that you consider yourself white, so , try to go "integrate" with some white folks from Wilton or Sharon , connecticut. call me with the results! then you might want to try some hick NASCAR town in South Carolina or Alabama. i am sure they can't wait to " integrate " with you.
