At least 45 people have been lynched in recent weeks as Haiti continues to be ravaged by a cholera epidemic. Haiti's communications minister has made an appeal for the lynchings to end and called for a campaign to ensure people understand how cholera spreads. More than 2,500 Haitians have died from the water-borne disease since October. Another 121,000 people have been treated for symptoms of cholera, with at least 63,500 admitted to hospital, figures show. The outbreak has also prompted angry protests aimed at the United Nations, whose Nepalese peacekeepers have been suspected of introducing cholera to Haiti. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced an investigation into the reports, although the UN initially denied the suggestion. Blame game Although many Haitians still practise voodoo or use aspects of voodoo in their religious worship, the latest violence erupted out of fears the traditional priests were using their powers to spread the infection. "The victims... were stoned or hacked with machetes before being burned in the streets," communications ministry official Moise Fritz Evens said. Haiti's communications minister said she abhorred the killings and insisted that the answer was to improve general education about how cholera is transmitted. "Voodoo practitioners have nothing to do with the cholera epidemic. We must press for an awareness campaign about the disease in the communities." A highly prominent voodoo leader, Max Beauvoir, told Reuters news agency police were not doing enough to stop the violence. "Since the earthquake some people have been blaming us, saying that we cast spells and did evil things which brought the earthquake as a punishment," he said. Haiti's cholera epidemic has provoked widespread fear across the country. Anger spread when suspicions emerged that the Nepalese UN peacekeepers could have brought the disease to Haiti - where it is extremely rare - from their country, where it is endemic. Poor sanitary conditions in much of quake-hit Haiti have contributed to the rapid spread of cholera, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can kill quickly but is treated easily through rehydration and antibiotics. The country was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in January 2010 that devastated most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed at least 250,000 people. Vudu is one of the stumbling blocks to Haiti´s progress hopefully the cholera epedemic kills vudu once and for all! Can you validate your statement? In the past, you've made it clear that haitians cannot speak for DR, who gives the right? You cannot just make a blantant statement!!!! Yet you are still here ...once you and your compatriots get out of my country and my countries business then I would say good luck and deal with it but since all the crap that happens in the west always filters back to us we should be concerned with what happens in the western desert! The compatriot asked you to "validate your statement." You are not going to snake your way out of this one that easily. I have started to ignore Haitian and pro Haitian posts but I will humour you. If you had read my posts before you would know this. Haiti's main problem is CULTURAL ,in other words the most backwards and regressive culture on the planet. The problem is not racial since many who shed their backwards cultural precepts actually move forward but any culture in which people still believe in zombies and all the primeval trappings of vudu are not ready for the 21st century.Vudu is a symptom of backwardness not the cause and the fact that Haitians not only practice vudu but have made it an official "religion" shows that as a culture you are not ready for civilisation . To make matters worse my country is infected to a much lesser extent by these same backwards cultural precepts which are the cause of much of the backwardness in my country. So hopefully Haitians will finally free themselves of their primitive "culture" (if biting the head of a live chicken is culture) and move forward to at least the 20th century. Removing these purveyors of backwardness and death (witch doctors) is a step in the right direction. Now I know I waste my time giving pearls to the swine but somehow I am still hopeful for the sake of the children of Haiti that these hard times will make Haitians change for the better. PS ,my COMPATRIOTS are DOMINICAN and I avoid fighting with my compatriots ,even the ones who provoke me because I know that when the chips are down we will be standing side by side defending our country unlike you the recent arrivals to the western part of our island You were asked by Tigerlumiere to validate your statement; instead of responding to this very simple request, you continue to ruminate the same filth over and over again. I pity your lack of insight and understanding or lack of knowledge about what is culture, civilization and more specifically what is Vodou. Vodou is a religion just like any other religion. Vodou and withcraft are opposites; one has nothing to do with the other. The fundamental practice of Vodou focuses on building community and healing. Don't speak of what you know nothing about. After the natives were decimated brutally by the Europeans in a genocidal outrage, Haitians became the very first known people/inhabitants of this island. Check your facts. Vodou is a religion just like any other religion. I'm sure all religions bite live chickens heads off!! ! Haitians became the very first known people/inhabitants of this island. OPlease tell us how people who were imported in the late 17 to early 1800's became "the very first known people/inhabitants of this island" ???? Todays Haitians were not the first nor the second on this island and not even the third ,life in the French colony of Saint Domingue was so BRUTAL that most slaves lasted little more than a year which means that most of the slaves that revolted against the French in 1791 were RECENT ARRIVALS which means you all have been on this island at most 200+ years .Your ties to this island are very superficial in all senses ...cultural,genetic and historic ! We have people in whose veins runs at least to 1490's and in many cases way before so puleaase stop the BS you ignorant peace of crap! Edited on 1/4/2011 11:38 PM by Pepe32. Los enemigos de la Patria, por consiguiente nuestros, están todos muy acordes en estas ideas; destruir la nacionalidad aunque para ello sea preciso aniquilar a la Nación entera si vis pacem para bellum |
