Not a good looking fence but at least is serving the purpose. Our fence will be much better, mostly reinforced prefabricated cement, taller, prouder, and we will also invite our graffiti artist to paint over it. You will see, you will be there in person to witness it. ![]() Ignorance is temporary, stupidity lasts forever. |

The Great Wall of China ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All About the Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). In Chinese the wall is called "Wan-Li Qang-Qeng" which means 10,000-Li Long Wall (10,000 Li = about 5,000 km). After subjugating and uniting China from seven Warring States, the emperor connected and extended four old fortification walls along the north of China that originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago). Armies were stationed along the wall as a first line of defense against the invading nomadic Hsiung Nu tribes north of China (the Huns). Signal fires from the Wall provided early warning of an attack. The Great Wall is one of the largest building construction projects ever completed. It stretches across the mountains of northern China, winding north and northwest of Beijing. It is constructed of masonry, rocks and packed-earth. It was over 5,000 km (=10,000 Li) long. Its thickness ranged from about 4.5 to 9 meters (15 to 30 feet) and was up to 7.5 meters (25 feet) tall. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Great Wall was enlarged to 6,400 kilometers (4,000 miles) and renovated over a 200 year period, with watch-towers and cannons added. The Great Wall can be seen from Earth orbit, but, contrary to legend, is not visible from the moon, according to astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Jim Irwin. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/greatwall/Allabout.html Edited on 4/1/2009 6:50 PM by yumnuk3. |

The heavily fortified border has been in place since the 1950s South Korea's defence ministry is considering deploying robots armed with guns along its border with North Korea. The robots are designed to strengthen surveillance, ministry spokesman Shin Hyun-don told reporters. The 4km (2.5 mile) wide Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea is already the most heavily fortified border in the world. Hundreds of thousands of troops patrol the frontier, which has been closed since the Korean War ended in 1953. The defence ministry said on Friday that it would complete a feasibility study of the planned system by the end of 2005, and the robots could be in operation as early as 2011. "If the surveillance system by robots is effective, we may withdraw part of our troops away from the border," a ministry official told the Associated Press news agency. South Korea has been anxious to improve security on the border with the North since three holes were discovered in the frontier fence in October. At first Seoul feared that North Korean agents had infiltrated the South, but officials eventually concluded that the holes had been made by a South Korean civilian defecting to the North. This is not the first time South Korea has deployed robots to help its defensive capabilities. Two rifle-equipped robots were reportedly deployed with South Korean troops in Iraq. north korean border patrol ![]() http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4425689.stm |

"Violence amongst Mexican drug cartels in the border states, on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border, has exponentially increased in the past year," according to the alert from First Observer, a trucking security program funded by a Homeland Security grant. "Truck drivers carry a risk as they are involved in operations that might interest these criminals," the alert said. The alert cited the efforts of Mexican President Feilpe Calderon to crack down on cross-border smuggling of drugs, which it says has hurt the cartels' operations. "With these difficulties, the cartels' gangs have become more aggressive and dangerous with their tactics," the alert said. "Violent crimes have surged throughout border cities and the violence that primarily occurred on the Mexican side has begun to spill into the United States." Though the alert did not come from the federal government itself, Sterline Payne, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, said the agency agreed with the assessment. TSA "concurs with the issuance of the alert and the information contained within," Ms. Payne said. David Ogden, deputy attorney general, told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday that the department "has identified the Mexican drug trafficking organizations as the greatest organized crime threat facing the United States today." About 5,300 people were slain in drug-related fighting along the U.S.-Mexico border in 2008. The full threat of the drug cartel's operations also includes kidnapping, bribery, extortion, money laundering and smuggling weapons from the U.S. into Mexico. "Truck drivers may face an elevated risk of being a crime victim as their loads represent a potentially easy payoff for criminals," said Don L. Rondeau, director of the Highway Information Sharing and Analysis Center which was also created by the Homeland Security grant. "We're strongly urging American trucking companies and owner-operators to exercise extreme caution when making deliveries or pickups along the Mexican border," Mr. Rondeau said. The highway center issued several guidelines for trucking companies who have scheduled deliveries in Mexico, advising them to stick to toll roads, to create a distress code to call for help, to report in with dispatchers after all scheduled and unscheduled stops, and to ensure in advance that cellular phones can get roaming service. http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/27/us-truckers-warned-violence-near-mexico-border/ ![]() ![]() Nothing says "Keep Out," like a 15 foot high steel fence. We are waiting after semana santa to name a steering committee for the group. This muro por la vida idea is taking off, and will be a great patriotic project that will hopefully unite our country and we will all participate in the task. Yumnuck, , great post, I got some ideas from it. The wall should be probably made of a combination of materials that are available in the DR. Maybe cement and steel at some places. The study that will be done will probably set the recommendations of best way to go. popon as usual beautiful pictures of the China wall, I also posted a link for the Mexican wall that should be checked out.
