The dominican state didn't exist, but the dominican nation (that is, the people) existed back on those times, in fact, it could be said that from the XVIIth century onwards we already had a national character of our own, despite being under the spanish banner. It's the same with you, the haitian nation existed before the revolution of 1791-1804. In fact, the appearance of the kreyol dialect on the 1750's signified the birth of your nation. Were we to apply your reasoning with everything else, then one could say that the haitians played no role at all during the american revolution, seen as how all the people of colour that participated on the siege of Savannah were all french subjects at the time. I have had this argument countless of times with some of your people, and it always comes down to the same thing, that is, to your double standards of seeing the history of the island, by wanting to deny any kind of merit to the dominicans that played notable roles during the time that the country was under the spanish flag, by using the lame argument of "they weren't dominicans, they were spaniards", while you don't hesitate to own every notable act that any haitian might have done before the appearance of the haitian state in 1804 (such as Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable's founding of Chicago, or the participation of the gens de couleur on the american war of independence). Do we play by the same rules, or do we simply break the cards? Edited on 8/14/2009 12:30 PM by Lautaro. I don't know about the 'common' Dominican, but anyone with decent schooling in history should be able to respect Touissaint. So I'm not sure he is a villain to the Dominican nation, even if he was momentarily an adversary. |
