Business elite and *old money ) yes many lightskin mulattos ,etc. Also many blacks 9darkskin) Haitians excel in education and in government work doctors lawyers etc..However, there are many lightskin farmers in Haiti in the outskirts in the countryside. SO not only big money rich folks are lightskin Haitians. In fact, they had an article on Haitians of Polish descent in CAZALE haiti rural area. .They are hardworking farmers in the countryside, Polish were recruited to fight with the French during the war and many died from yellow fever, etc. and the rest stayed in haiti.

In short, the story of the Poles as friends of Haiti and as settlers is greatly exaggerated to understate the case. However, Pachonski and Wilson do address the interesting question of how the myth grew, and they attribute it in great measure as being a creation of Jean-Jacques Dessaline himself. On Pachonski and Wilson's view, Dessaline was much taken by the fact that the Poles tended to treat the Haitians better than other Europeans and to have less regard for the French. The Poles did not want to be in Saint Domingue and, in general, opposed the war, however, they did follow their own orders and fought for the French cause. At the same time they expressed strong criticism for the French, had great sympathy for the Taino/Arawak Indians whom the Spanish had eliminated, and were not at all as racist as the French.

Again, the article you presented further supports, pecentage wise what I previously stated, that the numbers of white and mulato Haitians is and has always been very small. We know that they are there, but it is like searching for a needle in a haystack. As it has already been indicated above, only 240 Poles were still around among a population of 2-3 million liberated slaves two years after Haitian independence. The ratio of blacks always far outnumbered the whites/mulatoes by 1000 to 1 and this was the reason it enabled a successful slave revolt and uprising. Had the numbers been the otherway around, Haiti would not exist as we know it today, the first free black republic of the America's.

Yellow fever and the sheer number were a factor. You can find any war and find an outside factor that contributed to one side being victorious over the other.


I thought the mulattoes in haiti joined against the french. Stop making thing up to make a point and stop pulling numbers out the air. I thought the maroons were using guerrilla warfare.

Then the reason the north won the civil war was because of it's supplies of fresh bodies from Ireland, etc.

Haiti is land and who cares what the person look like as long as we unite for a common cause.

I hate it when people jump in the middle making an irrelevant comment without reading all the previous posts to understand what the hell we are talking about. The issue here has nothing to do with why or why not Haiti won independence from French colonial rule. We are talking about something else. However, the fact remains true and it is indisputable, numbers played a major role as the catalyst which sparked the fire for the eventual and consequential success during the initial stages of the rebellion. Whether or not ultimately other additional variables played a role can also be true, but irrelevant and has nothing to do with the point me and the other poster is trying to make.
