This is for readers who followed The Lede’s coverage of the activists who invented a replica of the French foreign ministry’s Web site earlier this month, and used it to post a statement that drew attention to the huge sum of money France forced Haiti to pay in the 19th century, after it won its independence in a successful slave revolt. The money, 90 million gold francs — which Haiti paid to France from 1825 until 1947 to compensate slave-holders for their loss of “property” — was estimated by the Haitian government in 2003 to be the equivalent of nearly $22 billion today. Last week, the people behind the hoax, who call themselves the Committee for the Reimbursement of the Indemnity Money Extorted from Haiti, or C.R.I.M.E., held a news conference in Montreal to explain, in English and French, why they had constructed their elaborate ruse. As The Canadian Press reported, they promised to continue to tweak France over the issue. The news agency explained: Members of the group, called the Committee for the Repayment of the Indemnity Money Expropriated from Haiti, or C.R.I.M.E. for short, unmasked themselves at a news conference Thursday. Sort of. Because an angry French government has threatened legal action, they wore Zorro-type face covers to shield their true identities, on the advice of a lawyer. “We want to talk about why we took this action but, at the same time, there are serious threats from the French government about legal action,” said one C.R.I.M.E. member, who didn’t identify herself. “That being said, we have every intention of continuing.” During the news conference, one member of the group said that they had been inspired by the anti-corporate pranksters known as the Yes Men. I know the French do not want to open themselves up to a major headache by way of an international call from all her past colonial possessions asking for similar treatment, but they should, at least, begin to explore a credible mechanism to help out Haiti. I say a good number of Visas, education, and energy by way of constructing and managing a major nuclear energy plant would greatly earn the French some semblance of respect from those who believe it has abdicated any responsibility for the tragedy called Haiti. Visas will help Haitian earn money and send back to Haiti enough to help support the reconstruction effort; education will help nurture the next wave of Haitians who will hopefully rise to the occasion and make Haiti a better place, and finally, energy will serve as the life blood to allow industry, government, and households to support the great efforts needed to mend Haiti and secure her future. Why do I doubt this will ever happen. US shoud help Haiti. They give little as a percentage of GDP and are very mean. They could rebuild Haiti for the cost of one Aircaft carrier. They killed farming in Haiti with subsidised rice and used the cheap labor there for years! S/ |
