1697 the treaty of ryswick was the beginning of all the mess, since the spanish in Santo Domingo neglected the western side of the island. In 1785 that's when the eastern spanish side of the island had a significant population it had increased to 155,000 of that same amount 125,000 were spaniards and criollos, mestizos, mulattos, freed blacks and about 30,000 were slaves. And since the eastern side of the island was not used for the same purposes as the western french part, where the french wanted to draw wealth through slavery the spaniards were trying to create a settlement apart from the main land. As a way of expansionism, the numbers in the amounts of slaves tells you the difference.
