RE: How is living in Haiti?
Cibeano,

Any dominican that dance merengue well dances kompas well..I remember getting amazement looks when I went out with dominican friends..Jabao tu bailes el merengue bien. In this aspect it is just learning how to speed up the tempo and dominicans slowing down the tempo. Merengue and Salsa is heard in the airwaves and the homes of many haitians especially boleros in spanish. This was just part of growing up listening to these type of music. We love J. L .Guerra and Fernando Villalona and Johnny Ventura are our favourites. Perico Ripao isn't heard but you'll hear bachata especially from the dominicans hair salons in Haiti.. We have something i think is kind of close but not really to bachata. You be the judge. It derived from haitian braceros in Cuba that came back to haiti..This music is getting very popular..

The guy in the straw hat is a haitian comedian that mocks the life of haitian peasants way of talking and style His name is Tonton Bicha. These are the illegal haitians mostly seen in DR. This is troubadour.. Not to be played

They also use the real creole that is spoken by the peasants..It's funny both countries identity is from the campo but it is shun upon..

yea they play bachata in the dominican hair salons in Haiti. Merengue is a faster more hyped up version of compas in my opinion with a slightly different-paced rhythm. Musical counterparts to me..

I totally agree jabao! Our music is becoming to American-urbanized. Compas is starting too lose its classic edge and feel more like a hip hop or R&B video (I have no problem with hip hop however) which I don't want. T-Vice, Carimi, Djakout are all great bands and are the prime of their time but some songs are just 'ugh' in my opinion.

RE: How is living in Haiti?
Jabao, I know all about the similarity in dancing kompas and merengue first hand. I went to a haitian party once in my early twenties when I had no idea as to what haitian music was. To make a long story short I noticed instantly the similarity between kompas and merengue, in both the tempo and the way it's danced. Needless to say before all was said and done many of the women I danced with must have felt i was born with it because they kept on asking my if I was Haitian or where I learned tro dance Kompa! Little did they know that neither was the case. I'm an excellent merengue dancer and hence an excellent kompas dancer

Im glad that you've hit the floor dancing some compas. As you mention you dance merengue well so compas comes naturally. did you like the troubadour.. I think they should have a concert at the border..jajjaj..peace among us brothers and sisters.

Hay,

I can't stand that rapping and even r n b into the mix in compas..I am very conservative all those timberland wearing with sport jerseys got to go..

I c you like it Cibaeno..yes very similar.. look what a little music can do..peace.. And what do you think of merengue falling off..im tired of Elvis Crespo winning all the arwards to pop merengue..jajaj

twoubadou music in Haiti is strongly influenced by cuban son indeed (Haitian migrants to Cuba who brought back their knowledge of Cuban musical tradition in the 20th century). Cubans have supported the music and for the most part embraced the Haitian community there.
