is anyone out there aware of the use of the modern, high pressure kerosene stoves in Haiti? i know that they use the old style wick types, but there are new designs which are more cost effective than even charcoal. any information out there? arkatype? they might be a good idea for a business here. why could we not assemble something as simple as that here?

OK-- NOW you guys are on the right track here! Just remember that the only reason that the DR does not look like Haiti is that Balaguer introduced subsidized propane and gave out cooking stoves- if Duvalier had done the same - Haiti would not look like this now..

I too was interest in this high pressure stove idea-- I have also seen that there are some being used in AFrica --- and some that run on some sort of waste product from- hold on- guess what- SUGAR CANE... we've got that..... NOW put those good minds to work on something constructive..

The Bagasse stuff is being used already in Les Cayes, I can put you in touch with some people from Boston/MIT who have a project...
But we really need to get the DR involved in this so that this country can PROFIT from the rebuilding.

Because REBUILD and REFOREST we must... It is an ISLAND>>>> remember?

GOOD WORK !!! CHEERS!! BRAVO!! MADE MY WEEK TO SEE (most of you) talking together like this-- hermonos, mes freres.

Actually here's the correct link. http://web.mit.edu/d-lab/haiti.htm

here's the proper link

http://bagazocharcoal.com/index.htm

quote

Bagazo's product is a new charcoal made using locally available agricultural waste materials. In Haiti, where we will launch our operations, these materials include the byproducts of sugar cane processing (called bagasse) and corn cobs.

Our charcoal is a superior alternative cooking fuel that can be used by more than 2.4 billion people worldwide who currently use biomass fuels for their daily cooking. Interviews in Haiti and Ghana revealed that users from these regions think our charcoal is better than what they currently use. Compared to its closest competitor, wood charcoal, Bagazo's charcoal lasts longer, lights up faster, and is lighter to carry.

In addition, our charcoal is cheaper to produce due to the low-cost production process we use and which we invented in collaboration with the MIT Development Lab. Tests in MIT labs revealed that our charcoal is much better for the environment and produces at least 40% less NOx and 35% less SO2 than wood charcoal. With Bagazo's charcoal there is no longer a need to use smoky cooking fuels or cut down trees to use as fuel. Our product will make a significant positive impact especially in countries like Haiti which is 98% deforested and where more than 8 million trees are being cut down every year.
