Calif regulators find pot smoke causes cancer

SAN FRANCISCO -Marijuana smoke has joined tobacco smoke and hundreds of other chemicals on a list of substances California regulators say cause cancer.

The ruling Friday by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment likely will force pot shops with 10 or more employees to post warnings. Final guidelines are expected by the time warning requirements take effect in a year.

The listing only applies to marijuana smoke, not the plant itself.

Spokesman Sam Delson says the state agency found marijuana smoke contains 33 of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco smoke.

Delson says the findings came from a review of more than 30 scientific papers.

California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn consumers of chemicals that cause cancer or reproductive harm.

There will always be exceptions.

There are people who have been smoking tobacco for more than 50 years and never develop lung cancer.There are people who eat foods loaded with saturated and trans fats at every meal and never develop heart disease.

That doesn't mean these outcomes are typical for the overall population under those same circumstances. Most people would develop lung cancer. Most people would develop heart disease.

The truth is that the chances of someone developing cancer, like most other diseases and disorders, envelop a whole combination of different factors such as diet, lifestyle, genetic predisposition, environmental influences, etc.

Anyway, as to your other question, I heard from my Pharmacology instructor, that it has always been difficult to find out if marijuana smoking causes cancer, because often the subjects who were being experimented on for their marijuana smoking, also smoked tobacco (cigars/cigarettes) regularly or had at least done so at one point in their lives; thus altering and interfering with the original theory and experimentation process (ie. Did the marijuana smoking cause cancer or was it the tobacco smoking?).

The bottom line is that ANY kind of smoke inhalation is not healthy for your lungs. And cancer should not be the only thing to be feared. There are all sorts of other diseases, which you increase your chances of developing if you smoke (such as COPD) and those are hell to live with as well.

definetely i have to agree with reina and working in the medical field i witness copd on a regular basis. i cant see how a substance like marajuana can be benificial in anyway as far as the longterm effects are concerned. this is a substance that causes rapid heart beats at alarming rates along with the many chemicals that are added to it to make the plant what it is. along with the many things that reina mentioned which she pretty much took the words out my mouth. my reccomendation would be to stay away from it.

This is the dumbest no surprise to this thing I have ever read .. ..Try to imagine one thing in this world that when set on fire and inhaled repeatedly into the human lung does not cause cancer ....just one ,putting smoke of any kind into your lungs repeatedly is no good for you dumbasses

you miss the point ...The government spent millions telling us what is only logical This is left over attitude from the past that says if we convince them it is bad they will stop ....no one is going to stop toking because the trade off is disproportionate .Does anyone think that drinking in excess does not cause a myriad of diseases including cirrhosis kidney failure and cancer etc . ........PS the little girl is my daughter
