There's so much culture, so much to see and do. It's the home of the Yankees; The home of the Metropolitan Opera; The home of Carneigie Hall; Museum of Modern Art; Guggenheim Museum; Museum of Natural Histroy; Tavern on the Green in Central Park; The home of the Bronx Zoo, etc. They also brag about all the institutions of higher learning that are located there, as Columbia University, New York University, Pratt Institute, Pace College, CUNY, Fordham U, John Jay University, Rockefeller Univ., etc. The New York lifers also mention the nightlife and entertainment which is unmatched by any other place on earth. You have Broadway Shows, hundreds of fine restaurants, impressive stadiums, thousands of nightclubs and bars, etc. When you think of a dream job, many people think of Wall Street or Madison Avenue; Or, some 7th ave. in the Clothing industry. If your are in the entertainment industry you have Julliard, and numerous possibilities for making a big splash, here New York has it all. Well, does it? (Madoff is now doing time for his antics on Wall Street!) Here's the down-side: Were there any young upwardly mobile people on Sept. 11, 2001? Or, were these these just a bunch of scared human beings? There were no fun having New Yorkers! Nobody saying "I love New York". Running for your life ain't cool! Professionals can run like anyone else... ![]() ![]() ![]() You see the clock behind the survivor walking in the ashes? Do you need Flava Flav to tell you what time it is? My brethren don't get left behind! That was only a harbinger of what's to come. New York is cool. It's a nice place to visit, but "I" wouldn't want to live there! Don't believe the hype. NYC is a has-been town, get out! Dios, Patria y Libertad. Maranatha, The King is coming. |

Those pictures might give the impression of a defeated people but they are FAR from the whole story. I saw New Yorkers come togather that day like I've never seen before and perhaps only one time since (during the blackout, to some extant). Whomever put those pics and comments together doesn't know or understand the mettle of New Yorkers, that's for damn sure. 'The past is never dead. In fact, it's not even past.' - William Faulkner |

I am a New York by adoption, I have been there and done that, Ok. I love New York like the next man; My son and daughter live there and were born there; They're 29 yrs old ,and 33 respectively. I arrived in the City when I was 8 years old, well over 45 years ago. I left there as a man with children. So if anyone loves NY it is me; My son works right next to ground zero! He's been working there since SEPTEMBER, 10, 2001; WHEN HE WAS HIRED! I've warned my kin to get the hell out of Dodge on many occassions; But, they rationalize like you do that New Yorkers can handle anything! 'To 'ta bien, no seas exsagerado! Well, what can I do but illustrate it as graphically as I can. If Nagasaki and Hiroshima would have received a "heads-up" before they dropped the bombs; Do you think they would have defied the warnings? Probably, most would have. But, some would have booked as soon as they got word. Yet, if you had a malignant tumor wouldn't you like to be told how much time you had to live, so that you could make arragements? Perhaps, go on a vacation, go on diet, seek a spiritual re-birth? Well, the writing is on the wall NYC, and all Cities around the world are just ticking time bombs waiting for a cataclysmic catastophre to anhiliate them "Katrina" style. I witnessed my first black-out in NYC in 1964; There was looting and vandalism committed. In NYC I saw many a Subway strike, many a Sanitation Strike, many a Teacher's Union Strike. I saw the riots in Harlem. I saw the gang violence in the 70's. I saw the Crack epidemic decimate NYC from a front row seat on 172 st & Audubon AVE. I never moved to the outer boroughs until 1987! I thought that was all there was Manhattan or nothing! Finally, I bid the city farewell, and thank God, I got out alive! Many of my contemporaries never made it out alive! The City is no Joke! My son was stabbed in the abdomen 3 years ago, and almost lost his life; Him and his friend made it to Columbia Presbyterian in a cab; My son walked in and said his partner needed help who had collapsed in the entrance to the ER from multiple stab wounds; they both survived; But is NYC worth anyone waiting to get bodied like that? I think not! NYC is not what is cracked up to be; There's a killer on the loose in every subway station, on every bus, in every apartment building, hiding in a dark alley as you walk home from the subway, or when you park you car in that dimly lit street you walk back home on. It's not just me that's saying for folks to get out of the City(s). Check out David Wilkerson, a man who has had a church in Times Square since the 1950's, when Nicky Cruz and The Dragons terrorized their enemies in the Barrios. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=91296 Como decian los Boricuas de NYC: "lo que viene es Saoco", mi pana! In Luke 17 Jesus said: 41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. Arsenio when I am your age there is a great chance I will feel the same way. I already look at pictures of mountain ranges like the one you posted and wonder when I'll live with a view like that. But it is indeed a young man's city, so for now I am proud to call it home. It is definitely a real rat race in here, but (for me so far) it is a lucrative rat race and as they say .... if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. |

Although I agree that to an extant New York is indeed a rat race, it's more than that, too. There's always something to do. Museums, theatres (saw the West Side Story revival this weekend on 47th street...not too thrilled, though), hell, even just going down to Coney Island and hanging out is fun. The city's a playground for someone such as myself and I love the city that I've called home all my life. 'The past is never dead. In fact, it's not even past.' - William Faulkner |

The city's a playground for someone such as myself and I love the city that I've called home all my life. yup agreed. and on another angle there is also a lot of genuine opportunity. New York schools gave me a level of education I could not have had in DR ... not because that level doesn't exist there, but it sure would have been harder to access with my family's means. and the firms I have worked for in NYC have all been eager to reward ambition, talent, etc. so for all these reasons we are touching on I've always been a proud Manhattanite there is a new hip-hop song from deap prez called NYDP. a great summation of the good and the dark of our city and its history, you guys should check it out if you can get ahold of it. |
