And in actuality he's half Puerto Rican. The other one is half black. That's as good as it gets. Edited on 9/13/2010 8:26 PM by LivinToDie. |

I like El Sitio a lot but prefer the more family atmosphere at Tropical Taste sometimes. Makes me feel like I'm in a house lol and the food is a bit better, fresher. When I want a close alternative to Haitian food and my moms not cooking I often go down to Tropical Taste. Also the Dominican rest. make stuff Haitians don't cook often like rabo and its practically the same just a little diff, like much of our food can be at times. Anyways people are real nice at both places. There's another one I just found called Thamara on Kimbal and Palmer. Pretty decent but kind of confusing, odd menu. its like a regular fast food place gyros, fries, burgers etc, part jibaritos, and a random Dominican menu on the side. The guy I'm guessing is the owner is the same guy from Punta Cana awhile back. Thanks for the info but i think the main part of the disscussion was concerning dominican festivals. do you have any info on dates and location? Back to what you mentioned i will consider the locations for restaurants. |

You can't argue otherwise. They're only 2, or 1.5% of population. Edited on 9/15/2010 12:04 PM by LivinToDie. |

I love spending extended weekends there.) But seriously, New York is very, very expensive (especially for housing) for a new immigrant (or for that matter, for Americans too). In contrast, while Chicago is not cheap, it is much more immigrant-friendly and housing is much more affordable. Indeed, Mexicans have been coming here since the Second World War and we have the U.S.'s second largest Puerto Rican community. And we have the largest Polish community in the country. There is also a sizable Haitian community in Evanston and Rogers Park. One would be hard pressed to say that Chicago is not as diverse as New York. WE ROCK!!! A problem is that Dominicans in Chicago are nowhere near as organized as they are in NYC. There is no center to the community. More than a few years back, there was an annual "Dominican Picnic" that seemed to grow exponentially each year. Everybody loved it and looked forward to it each summer. And then some silly, stupid dispute between supporters of Leonel and Hipolito killed it. I couldn't believe it. I was surprised to learn that there are quite a few Dominicans in Waukegan (about an hour north of Chicago). This was surprising until a friend of mine pointed out that Dominicans tend to live in or near Puerto Rican neighborhoods in Chicago -- and there is an established Puerto Rican community in Waukegan. You lived in Chicago???....wow! all the tough talk and you couldnt set up a meeting with me and Im just a rocks throw away from you. al capo di tutti capi de los Dominican trolls |
