As Dominicans we must share with others what it really means to be a Dominican. We are a country gifted with love and kindness. No matter how much suffering we have been through, our smiles are always there to warm your heart. In these times of economic and moral turmoil, its always a good idea to look at our many plusses. This video from Caminantes por la Vida 2007 is a good representation of who and what we are as a nation with a very rich and diverse culture. For those of you who haven't been back home lately, here is a view of the old and the new joined together for the betterment of our society. Edited on 9/9/2009 8:22 AM by Sajomero. |

We have to get accustom to call ourselves Quisqueyans. Why? That is our real National Identity, even though it is not legally accepted. We were proud Dominicans before 1844. Duarte and the Trinitarians fought as Dominicans because they wanted the island to be named Santo Domingo instead of Haiti. They succeeded, but after that, we make Haitians and us Dominicans regionally: inhabitants of the same Island of Santo Domingo. Our national name didn't aroused to surface until after the Restoration of the Independence in 1865. That name is Quisqueya. Our National Anthem is the best witness that our forefathers and Trinitarians wanted Quisqueya to be the name of our Homeland. It is not that Dominican is a bad or wrong, on the contrary, it is part of our history and was our identity since 1621 until 1844. Not a national identity, but the identity of the People loyal to the Spanish Crown. We were forced to be Haitians from 1822 to 1844 and the Trinitarians were the ones who refused to be Haitians and fought as Dominicans to become free Dominicans, independent from Spain or any other foreign power. They (Trinitarians) were not permitted to continue Duarte's ideals of a free, independent and sovereign country and when Duarte's remains came from Venezuela in 1884, the funeral ceremony was accompanied by our National Anthem. Quisqueyans is our National Identity and we should make the best effort to place the name of Quisqueya in our Constitution. It's been overdue for over 165 years, but it is not too late to straighten things out to make the beautiful works, such as the one you're doing, worthly of pride and joy by our People, knowing they have found their true and proper national identity. Unfortunately, and I hope to be wrong, but the sad thing about your topic is that it might not attract too many posters, because it lacks controversy. People are too much attracted by slime, misery, pain and suffering of others. The morbid craving to be spectators of negativity in humanity, that is what attracts the attention of the masses. But at least it makes me feel good to know that you Sajomero are part of a special and elite group of individuals that wish to share with the rest of the world, the positive aspects of mankind, to bring about a joyful message and that special something that is good and beautiful but hidden inside and within Dominican society. It brings us hope to learn that it is not gone, but still there alive and well, but buried beneath and all we need to do is make the effort and sift through all the negativity that surrounds it to discover a pleasant surprise, a truly valuable and real treasure.
