James Jay Lee, 43, left behind a hatred-filled online manifesto, ranting: "Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture." He demanded that the company deliver pro-sterilization and anti-war programming. Lee -- who had been protesting outside the channel's headquarters in Silver Spring for years -- began his siege about 1:30 p.m. after entering the lobby, firing a shot and announcing, "Nobody is going anywhere!" He also carried in a canister containing explosives. ![]() ENVIRON-'MENTAL': James Lee, in one of his many protests outside the Discovery Channel building in Maryland, took hostages there yesterday. Heavily armed cops ringed the HQ and eventually killed him. Photos: Discovery gunman Discovery Channel employee Larry Groves, 58, said, "I was in a conference room, and all of a sudden I heard a shot. They told us to get out." Another worker, Dan Linfield, said an announcement over the building's public-address system originally told panicked employees to "stay put" after the shot rang out, but 10 minutes later, ordered everyone to evacuate. The building has 1,900 workers -- and kids in a day-care facility. Cops tried negotiating with Lee -- who was holding the employees, including a building security officer, hostage -- for four hours, said Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger. But when they saw via security cameras that the lunatic had pulled out a handgun and was pointing it at a hostage, a police sniper shot him dead. All three hostages escaped unharmed, although one of the canisters went off when police shot him. Police recovered several other explosive devices in Lee's backpacks. Yaya Fanusie, an acquaintance of Lee's, saw him on a bus, carrying two boxes en route to the building yesterday. He said his going off the deep end was no surprise. "He was a danger to society," Fanusie said. Lee -- who had cited the environmentalist book "Ishmael" by author Daniel Quinn and the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" as his inspirations -- was obsessed for years with the Discovery Channel, whose programming he viewed as a threat to the environment. In a manifesto on his Web site, SaveThePlanetProtest.com, Lee listed 11 strident demands on the Discovery Channel to prove "their commitment to save the planet," including "stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies." "Saving the environment and the remaining species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels," Lee wrote. "The humans? The planet does not need humans." Lee had been arrested outside the Discovery Channel in 2008 after a protest in which he threw thousands of dollars into the air, causing a frenzy as homeless people he had enlisted scrambled to pick up the money. "When we heard the news" yesterday about the hostage-taking, "we joked, 'It must be that Lee guy,' " said Dave Glanz, a motion graphics designer who does work for the channel Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/eco_wacko_slain_in_siege_at_tv_hq_CIhVSZndkl7dzk72CgbcGL#ixzz0yNg8zbrs al capo di tutti capi de los trolls |
