I grew up listening to the New York-Caribbean heartbeat. I was a Symphony Sid Kid. Listening to the radio program late into the wee hours, then waking up tired from losing sleep, then off to school with the tunes in my head. "Quitate la Mascara", la la lae, bandolera. ![]() ![]() |

That was before there was a Polito Vega, or any FM station that played 'Salsa'. His Radio Show Trademark Theme: http://www.hardsalsa.com/files/Joey_Pastrana_-_Sid_walk2.mp3 (MP3) Quote: By 1957, Sid had left Boston and returned to New York, this time working on WEVD AM & FM. The station in the 1920s and 30s had been known for ethnic music (Yiddish, Italian, etc.) as well as for a very liberal and pro-labor stance on politics. (WEVD had been founded by socialist Eugene V. Debs.) Sid's show featured Latin Music (Salsa), for which, as Donald Fagen recalled in a letter to Countermoon Zine, His choice of music proved controversial,[22] and he was dubbed by some the "Jazz Traitor". On the other hand, some critics found his Latin music show both interesting and important, and praised the concept as "an extraordinary meeting of cultures."[23] Then in the late 70's, encouraged by his engineer, Marty Wilson, Sid again started to play jazz in the last hour of his show. -Wiki December 14th 1909 - Sidney Tornapol AKA Sidney Torin was born lower East Side of New York City. 1940s - Sidney Torin becomes a Jazz Disc Jockey at WBNX in The Bronx. His handle name was Sidney Torin. He was given the moniker "Symphony Sid" from customers where he worked in a record shop called "Symphony Records." 1960s - The Latin Soul Show launches on the radio station WEVD in NYC. Disc Jockey Symphony Sid aired Latin Jazz, Boogaloo, Sweet Latin Soul and Sweet R&B. Symphony Sid was considered a traitor by many including former colleagues of the Jazz Music Industry. 1968 - Latin Soul Artist Joey Pastrana recorded the opening theme song "Sid Walk" for The Latin Soul Show - Symphony Sid Show. 1970 - Joe Bataan recorded the opening theme song "Jumpin with Sid." Theme song was only used a couple of months for the opening of the Symphony Sid Show. 1972 - The Latin Soul Show-Symphony Sid Show went off the air. Fania Records recorded and released the album "The Last Broadcast of Symphony Sid" http://hardsalsa.com/files/Last_Broadcast_Symphony_Sid_01.mp3 featuring Willie Colon, Ralfi Pagan, Santos Colon and a host of others. Symphony's last show was broadcasted remotely at the famous Cheetah club. http://www.hardsalsa.com/Timeline.html Edited on 10/26/2011 3:12 PM by Guarocuya. ![]() ![]() |
