Councilman Rodriguez is seen bleeding on his forehead before being taken away by police at the Occupy Wall Street sweep.

City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez was among the hundreds of people arrested during a sweep of the Occupy Wall Street encampment Tuesday.

Councilman Jumaane Williams said he witnessed his colleague's arrest, and says he saw the councilman bleeding on his forehead before being led off by police.

Video of his arrest confirms this, but Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that to the best of his knowledge, Rodriguez has not claimed to be injured.

Kelly said Rodriguez was arrested while trying to get through police lines to protesters.

Rodriguez's attorney, Andrew Stoll, said he has been denied access to his client.

About a dozen New York City leaders, including councilmembers, held a press conference to decry the overnight sweep.

Williams himself was detained at the West Indian Day Parade in September. The NYPD said it did so while verifying his identity.

Ydanis Rdz might be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. I mean for a high profile guy, a public figure in the NYC hispanic community, he might just as well do something to enhance his appearance.
I suggest a make-over, perhaps put on a few pounds, weight lift to increase muscle mass, remove that mold on the side of his face, improve diction and perhaps do something about his eyes, nose and ears.

I mean, it is human nature, people pay more attention to the eye appeal of the messenger rather then on the substance of the actual message. Sad but true.

Guillermone: I see your point. I think he looks as if he used to be a boxer with that smashed nose.
On another note, Ydanis came over fully grown; He learnt to speak English as an adult. You know that people like that have a hard time getting rid of that foreign accent. But, he could improve his diction since it is critical to represent his community and himself more professionally. Besides that you can gain weight, develop muscles, but, you can't change ugly.

How about a few classes on 'class'?

Well, he has hope. He may be not be the most attractive guy in politics, but at least he is not a fugly dugly...........

I will give him credit though. He is a country boy from Licey, who came to the US almost at the cut off point of maturity, was still able to attend college and become a teacher, instead of working as NYC gipsy cab driver or bodega as many Dominican immigrants do.

Nevertheless, most definitely the man needs to work on his image, develop a more polished and refined persona. I believe it will better enable him to mingle with the upper echelons of NYC social circles and political powerhouse. Otherwise, to remains a plain Jane, will not help him rise above or go beyond a grass roots level community politician.

NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez Detained in Zuccotti Raid, Urges Mass Involvement in OWS

One of the factors that fueled Thursday’s huge march on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City was the dramatic surprise police raid on Zuccotti Park earlier in the week. Among those arrested in the raid was New York City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and then held in a police van alone for two hours. Rodriguez’s arrest came just a week after he helped organized an 11-mile march from the his district in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, a largely immigrant community, to Occupy Wall Street. He describes his ordeal in police custody and why the experience has only emboldened him to continue his involvement with the Occupy movement. "We wanted to bring more black and Latino participants to that movement, because we believe that this movement is not only for the college students, this movement is not only for the unemployed, it’s for the working class, it’s for the middle class," Rodriguez says. "A block before I was arrested, there was a large number of demonstrators, and I saw a potential conflict that could happen. And what I did, I moved to the east side of Broadway, where there was not any demonstrations going on, any rally. It was when I walked to the next block, two blocks before the park—I believe it was two blocks... That’s where I was stopped. I said, ’I’m Councilman Rodriguez. I’d like to keep going, walking to the park.’ I was pushed back, and I was thrown on the floor. A police officer came from the middle of the street. He jumped on top of me."
