Dominican Prostitute Fights For Labor Rights in New York
“They don’t want to give us our rights because many of them are married, many of them are politicians, religious leaders, policemen, firemen, and any other type of man you can think of. They don’t want to be embarrassed so they want to keep us a secret. The time for secrets is over and prostitutes need to have the right compensation. We work all night long sometimes in the cold weather. We perform our activities in cold dark alleys and sometimes the customers don’t even pay us after we pleasure them. Most of us work over 70 hours a week with no overtime pay or workers compensation. The pimps don’t take us to the hospital when we catch diseases. Most of us suffer from knee problems because we must often kneel down on the hard pavement to do our job but nobody cares. A lot of the girls suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome from excessive manual stimulation of the clients several times a night. The labor department needs to help people like us because we are not hurting anybody and we are not paid adequately for our services. If pimps want us to work for them, they should be legally obligated to provide us with knee protectors, ergonomic wrist supporters, contraceptives, health insurance and anything else we need to perform our duties,” says Dejesus.
