Up and coming!
Lately i've been pondering of going back to DR and establishing a business. I was born in the San Jose de Las Matas so I'm familiar with the culture and language. With a bachelor in Computer Science and Master in Information Science and over 7 years experience in Database Marketing with a fortune 500 company I'm pretty much familia in the IT industry. Below are a few business area that I would think could work in the DR, but would like to get the input from the people that actually live in the island.

- Surveilance systems - due to the high crime rate wouldn't this service be on high demand from both residential and business areas.

- Tech Support - accomodating medium to large size businesses.

- Software and Web developer -

- Database marketing - I'm not sure how the banks handle this in DR? anyone?

Any Ideas!!!

It Can Be Done.
I know a German guy who came here and first worked as a freelancer repairing people's computers at their homes.
Now he owns a very successful shop selling computer stuff, doing repair and software work.
People trust him and appreciate his honesty and reliability.
In this country these are true assets...
I wish you luck!

You will have no problem in the DR if you are fair and honest, provide quality work, reliable, trustworthy and willing to provide service. I know a Cuban guy who came to the DR with only the clothes on his back and today owns and runs a very successful business. While our Dominican compatriots were out womenizing, drinking, partying and neglecting their customer base this Cuban guy worked all the time. He was available on holidays, week-ends, nights and would never turned down anything as long as he knew could do the job, he even worked everyday "en semana santa. "

People are always looking to reinvent the wheel, "ya no hay nada que inventar," you just got to build a better mouth trap. My friend there is no secret to success any place on planet earth. It is the same thing whether you are in a 3rd world underdeveloped country or in the almighty great US of A. Hard work and dedication is enough in the DR and will enable you to outsmart and beat your competition.

Then again I don't know if what I have said above applies to you. It sounds to me like you are retiring to the DR, probably already have enough to live on and probably are only just looking to do something to keep busy. Either way you will do quite well I am sure. The DR is bad place to be employed, but a great place to be an entrepreneur. GOOD LUCK and I WISH YOU WELL !!!!!

That is a good area if you can get it started and running. Any business that involves having a store front is risky, too many masked gun men popping up. You might need a body guard to go with you if you will be traveling to differant parts of the island to install equipment... someone might try to set you up and send you to an address were they will be waiting for you. My friend has a construction company, and he has an armed security guard go into the empty building to see if any one is hiding before the employees start working

The DR has many opportunities if you are willing to work at it. I have several bits of advise,
Constantly change your business patterns and become unpredictable. Provide a good product and educate people while at it.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Treat all Dominicans as enemies of your business. Guard all your Business secrets, take courses in counter espionage counter surveillance. Study and learn the nuances of those around you. Finally trust no one and adopt the believe that "No Dominican Can be Trusted with your business interest".

So, you don't like what's happening in DR....
