despite rumors to that effect, WalMart never came here, nor does it plan to. the success of that enterprise is its business model, which is based on the concept of JUST IN TIME INVENTORY. that cannot work in the DR, for reasons too numerous to mention.

They have one in PR. If they use the PR location in order to stock the DR location, it could work. But they would have to sell many of the Dominican products. La Sirena is always full even has traffic in the parking lots, you would think that it was xmas shopping season

nope, xwill. here is how Walmart works. you buy a toothbrush in a store in Florida, and, in 14 seconds, the central warehouse knows, and restocks the supply bin with one replacement. this is multiplied for all transactions. so, the re-stock for each store comprises only that which was sold, and there is no need to hold inventory. it is the removal of inventory costs that allows them to sell cheaply. because of the time sensitive nature of their operation, the only trucks that move walmart products are owned and serviced by them. that would never work here. it could, in PR, because it is a US territory.

dread,
They might not be able to have the timing that they have in the US but DR is more laid back and people are use to slow customer service and items being out of stock. Many big names companies are moving into DR and they might want a flagship store in DR. They have one in Mexico so I think that they have enough cash and smart people that could make it work. It would be good for the consumer and could force the others to lower prices.

xwill, people might tolerate slow delivery, and out of stock products, but Walmart cannot function along those lines. the only reason that they can sell for the prices they do is because they remove inventory from the equation. it is just like Dell computers. Belly will tell you that the Dell computer you bought today was probably made yesterday. they do not hold stock, which means they do not pay for large storage space, risk damage by flood and fire, obsolescence, and all of the issues which cause product prices to rise.

Even if they would ever enter DR, don't think that they would be selling at such low prices. Shipping and customs charges would get them unless they had a deal .
Have you heard anything on Ikea? I still have not checked it out for myself but are people buying or just looking?

well, from what i can gather, they attracted a lot of attention in the first few weeks, but now business is really off. most people are just buying novelty items, not real big ticket stuff. besides, the shop is set up in such a way that you have to spend an hour just getting from the entrance to the exit. i would like to see it for myself before making any assessment

Tesco is the supermarket chain leading the fight against cancer with the super tomato.

About the only good thing they do.

Wal-mart should keep out - hypermartets are no good in countries with high unemployment.
