Now guys settle down, this is a symbiotic exchange that is supposed to be taking place, not a mud slinging duel. Please take your disputes outside so we won't get mud splashed all over! There are small Mariculture/Aquaculture operations in the DR. There are fresh water prawns (macrobrachian rosenbergi) growout ponds, for many years now, that looks great (but for me taste leaves much to be desired). Post-larvae shrimp are imported. Some final product is exported and the rest is local consumption. There is also a Cobia operation that has been in operation for almost 3 years. Doing well. The National Aquarium in SD has a new operational (private) hatchery for marine species that is producing a few species. Interesting business, but unfortunately like everything in "el pais de las maravillas", one needs well positioned "Godfather" in the Government. Edited on 6/20/2009 9:59 AM by Juango. |

There is a large salt water shrimp farm in the coast in Barahona that has been in business for many years, selling mostly to hotels and the local market. With aquaculture there are many challenges, mainly cost of the food that the fish eat and refuse control. In the DR another problem is security for the product as there is a lot of looting and pilferage by employees, as well as predators. There are many successful ventures in Australia, France, China and elsewhere that we can model after, including both salt water and fresh water fish farming. Edited on 6/20/2009 10:27 AM by generoso.
