Joan Guzman wins it: Red badge of courage Guzman gets second chance to play in 'Rush Hour' (Funeka) traffic on HBO Gratified Guzman: Bring me head of Ricky Hatton or Tim Bradley De La Hoya inks Joan Guzman, world's best lightweight If you don't think the Nevada boxing commission is not cracking down on drug cheaters, then think again. Former IBF lightweight champion Ali "Rush Hour" Funeka just found that as the commission has suspended the South African boxer for nine months and hit him with two fines. Funeka, who lost to Joan Guzman in his last bout, was fined $35,000 and ordered to return a weight making penalty of $15,625 paid to him by the fighter from the Dominican Republic. Funeka's total purse was $105,000 so he is coughing up about one third of that. Funeka and his representatives admitted to the NSAC Wednesday that the stringbean lightweight boxer used a banned diuretic to make the 135 pound limit for an HBO televised bout from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The verboten drug in question is hydrochlorothiazide. The fight took place on March 27 and was a rematch of a disputed draw when they first fought in Quebec on Nov. 28. Guzman won a split decision in the March rematch despite being a bloody mess at the finish. "We ask only for leniency. We admitted that he (Funeka) did something wrong," Leon Margules, a lawyer hired by promoter Gary Shaw said. Funeka claimed he took the prohibited diuretic because a long flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta and then on to Las Vegas made his legs swell. South African boxer Ali "Rush Hour" Funeka hit with nine month ban, dating back to March 27, for using banned diuretic drug (boxingrepublic.com Photo) Funeka claimed he was unaware the diuretic was banned although he and his manager signed a commission form listing the banned substance. Guzman weighed 148 pounds, 13 over the lightweight limit for March 27 rematch against Ali Funeka which ended in split decision victory for the Dominican Republic boxer. In a fight day weigh in, Guzman was nine pounds over. (Chris Robinson, Examiner.com Photo) Funeka also told the commission he weighed 134 pounds two weeks before the fight when his actual weight was 146 or 11 pounds over the limit. Funeka, age 32, has a pro record of 30-3-3 with 25 knockouts. The 34 year old Guzman remains undefeated at 30-0-1 with 17 KOs to his credit. al capo di tutti capi de los trolls |
