Drifting - Campeonato Ceritos Mobil 1
Hi!,

I was at the tournament of drifting/doughnuts that took place this sunday at the Mobil 1 Raceway. Needless to say, it was pretty interesting and there were a lot of crazy stunts. You can see the whole gallery on http://www.autofiebre.com/fotosceritos/

RE: Drifting - Campeonato Ceritos Mobil 1
Greetings,

I have been involved in Motorsports for over 20 years and have been involved in Drifting for 7 years. I have organized competitions and events all over the Southeast US and have worked with all of the major sanctioning bodies(D1, Formula D, Nopi)
If anyone at any of my events tried to pull the stunts that some of your participnts are seen doing in the photos I would ban them for life. The blatant disregard for competitor and fan safety borders on the criminal.

I agree with you...

But since there's no one to ban them and it's permited, I just enjoy the show, they really try hard to do the craziest stunts of all Thankfully noone was injured during the event, but bad things can happen.

AnthonyC, i myself am an avid motor racing fan. i used to rally in my youth, and have had the privelege of competing against Roger Clark, juha kankonnen, and timo makinen, among others. racing is in my blood, but i do not need to have that blood spilled at a spectator event. for that reason, i stay away from all these events in the DR, because there seems to be no interest in spectator safety here. i have watched drag races with spectators lining the strip , with nothing between them and the cars. and these are not impromptu events: they are organised meets. one mistake, and 15 people get killed, 36 injured. there are no first aid centers, no medical facilities, nothing. it is lunacy, pure and simple. if i need to see cars driven in anger, i will go to places like Lime Rock, thank you!

100% with you on that.

I have had the chance to organize a few events in the DR but have passed on the chance.
In one event I said that crowd control was necessary and that I wanted 2 sets of paramedics on site(one set for the competitors and one for the fans) with a ambulance manned and ready plus a $3 million dollar insurance policy(industry standard). The principles said no so I walked.
One day an accident will happen where many people will get hurt or even killed. When it does motorsports in the DR will all but die as the press and the Church will call for it's banning.

AnthonyC, we are speaking about two different thinking levels here. back in 1983, i entered a forest rally called The Jersy Bounce, which was run mainly in the night. the navigator screwed up one instruction, and we went off course for a while. we had to make up time to get to the checkpoint, so i dropped the hammer in order to catch up. i came around a horseshoe fully sideways, and the checkpoint was 10 yards away. the principals of the rally saw me, and they promptly sent us home (disqualification for unsafe driving). it did not matter that there were very few spectators at that point; they had rules, which were not to be countermanded. that would never happen here.

Well if they ban motorsports they should ban any kind of driving in the DR. It's still more dangerous to drive in the public roads than in the racetrack. But yes, sometime a big accident will happen and then people will say that there were not enough measures taken to prevent it. Then people will forget and another events will take place. That is the DR's way.

Dreadlocks, I agree 100% with the thing about rules. When lives are at risk and specific rules are set in place to guarantee safety, they should always be enforced.

DaniDr, there are nutcases in the USA too. in the eighties, there were friday night drag events along a road in brooklyn called Fountain Avenue. people would line the streets to watch knuckleheads race each other in 350 horsepower Mazda rotaries. like clockwork, the cops would come and turn on the fire hydrants, flooding the streets, effectively cancelling the event. the geniuses would simply take the fun somewhere else. the cops then decided that they would just confiscate cars of people at the event; racers AND spectators. that cooled them off. but you have to take a stand, and that will not happen here.

What needs to be done is for somebody to contact Exxon/Mobil and tell them what is going on at the track that they are sponsoring.
I know it is actually the Dominican distributer but don't think for a moment that if somebody does get seriously injured or killed a lawyer won't be filing a lawsuit against the Oil Company in the US.
