The Spanish were so disgraced by the outcome of the struggle that began that day that they've practically erased it from their standard histories. But the struggle is credited for intiating many things that also adversely afffected Spain. Some have cited it as one of the causes the brought down O'Donnell's government in Spain, others as one of the inspirations for the Cuban revolt against spanish rule that began in 1868, three years after the successful completion of The War for Restoration.
