Maybe festivals in the DR need more publicity internationally. http://news.yahoo.com/photos/london-s-notting-hill-carnival-1314622080-slideshow/ http://www.antilliaansefeesten.be/nl/index.htmlhttp://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2011/08/29/photos-notting-hill-carni_n_940060.html#s342606&title=Purple_Paint_Dance S. They estimate that only one in three participants are of caribbean lineage in London. same in Holland. This is why I show a picture of girls participating of mixed color. I doubt if there are one million caribbean decent people in London at the present time. At one time I was involved with the Jamaican community and many community leaders were anxious to get native English participation. And sell the beer! Also many Europeans visit for the London festival. But you make a valid point - I just think that if the mixed heritage of the DR was focused in one international event some tourism gains could be made - especially if it was slightly off season. S. |

It's called Zomercarnaval (Summer carnaval) here. A lot of people enter the parade. Mostly people from Curacao, Suriname, Bonaire, Sint-Maarten and ofcourse Dutch people. We sure as hell can't dance to latin music, but some of us sure try. Only downside to this is that every year after the parade people get shot. The result of a discussion should not be winning, but progress. |

Over the years DR has done a poor job of promotion and largely gone with the low fruit strategy; now it's high time she made a move made a long time ago by her smaller competitors in the region and gain greater international recognition and the valuation this recognition can have on the bottom line for the nation. There are still vast areas of the DR that have barely touched their potential for tourist development. The Southwest is one such vast area, but you have the interior of the country too. Hopefully the leadership doesn't drop the ball on this moving forward. Edited on 10/1/2011 10:36 AM by Atabey. Atabey, i have to agree with you wholeheartedly on this matter. any expòsure you get, be it from sports, music, the arts, or academia, helps to go a long way. in sports, the plum in the basket of the DR is baseball, which, sadly, does not have that much of a following outside of the USA, in terms of tourist potential. countries that play international sports, such as soccer, benefit greatly from the exposure. secondly, the powers that be have not spent the promotional dollars well. i hardly ever see a spot about the DR on any worthwhile tv channel, at a time when people are actually awake. the unending potential of this beautiful land is being squandered because it is tied up in thehands of too many crony type drones, who will not give bright people a chance to make improvements. same old same old. nothing new. been there, done that. |

Festivals and carnivals in the UK get huge publicity across Europe. DR could do much for the Spanish speaking world. Perhaps one of the TV channels should be brought under state control - this aspect of the media lacks focus at the moment. S. |
