actually, in all fairness to Kat De Luna, it is the whole commercial music world that caused this mess. she is an attractive women, who is a star because of video. she has next to no talent, and, had she lived in the times before MTV, she would have been unknown. it is no different than the reality that in today´s world, Joe Cocker would never have made it, but Justin Bieber has.

No..... its not her fault. Somebody thought it was a good idea to PAY her to sing and she just could not turn down the offer. And if I were her I would not turn it down either, no matter how bad I sing.

But all kidding aside. The problem with the music industry, is that it does not really value talent but rather who is the greatest money maker. It's all about the bottom line. It boils down to business.

I mean you take half of these so called "singers" and take away the marketing and the magic of a recording studio and most of them aint worth a dime. That is why when you take some one like Kat De Luna, a cute little Dominican kid from the Bronx, who sings good at neighborhood parties but then put her in front of a real live audience, with out the help of technology to hide voice flaws, you see the results.

But don't be dissapointed. This is what life is all about today. I mean nothing is real anymore and thanks to the help of surgery, make-up, technology, wigs & extensions, chemicals, drugs and all sorts of fake stuff to enhance appearance and performance, nothing should surprise us anymore.

I myself am afraid to see the real thing.

perfectly said, guillermone. in the distant past, you needed talent, and nobody cared what you looked like. Chaka Khan is a tremendous talent, but she would never have made it in today´s world, because of her weight. Curtis Mayfield would never have been heard from, because he was not exactly handsome. Joe Cocker´s manager said that Joe´s face reminded him of the back of a bus. it is called ¨the lowest common denominator¨. this is why people were upset that a magnificent talent like Esperanza Spaulding won the grammy, in preference to some mediocrity like Justin Bieber.

While it is true for Bubble Gum pop acts that has always been the case. And yet other less attractive acts do quite well.

None of which you would call attractive

Other top selling acts are Lil Wayne, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Eminem, Pit Bull......I can go on and on

they might not be attractive, as you say, but they have the required stage personna. i am referring to people who simply had talent, but not the stage look necessary to draw attention. none of the people to whom you refer fall into the category of visually uninteresting.

Stage presence has always been a prerequisite since their has been stages.

Joe Cocker had none. he has a spastic tendency, and even looks mildly handicapped. quite the opposite to people like Elvis. yet, he managed to have a fabulous career.
