RE: NBA the Dominican Impact!
well, JEM, i am happy to see that you believe that the word ¨beginning¨ is more important than the word ¨dominate¨. let us get real, here. DR has one superstar in the NBA. that is not dominance. it is like saying that the virgin islands are beginning to dominate the NBA because they gave us Tim Duncan. time will tell if the DR occupies a place of greater prominence in the future, but, as of now, it is one guy. there are numerous other countries who either have a star or two, or had one in the past. i do not consider brazil to be dominating the nba because it has a few pro players in the league. to DOMINATE means to have control and ascendancy over a situation. baseball, yes, NBA ,no. linguistically, i believe you should state that dominicans are beginning to make their mark in the NBA; domination is a different concept. african americans and jamaicans dominate olympic sprint events, in that the winners in most sprint events usually come from one of those countries, along with trinidad, cuba and the bahamas, to a lesser degree.

RE: NBA the Dominican Impact!
Dreadlock, can you please show me when and where I said that Dominicans dominate in the NBA? I re-read what I wrote and I don't see where I said that. No offense or disrespect, but don't you think you're being a little too anal about the usage of the phrase "beginning to dominate"? Clearly, an interpretation of that phrase can be understood to mean "beginning to make a mark". But hey, I understand that no two people are exactly alike, so I guess you didn't see it that way, but that is in fact what was meant by the phrase. I'm pretty sure that ny4life meant the same thing as well when he used the phrase. You are absolutely right, at the present time there is only one Dominican superstar in the NBA, so we would be incorrect in saying that we dominate the NBA because obviously African-Americans are the ones who currently dominate and that is why I place more emphasis on 'beginning' vs. 'dominate'. Now, FYI: After baseball, basketball is the most popular sport in Dominican Republic, so who's not to say that in a few more years Dominicans alongside Argentinans, Eastern Europeans and other nationalities can possibly dominate in the NBA one day? As a college student myself, I can concur on what ny4life previously mentioned in regards to many Dominicans who are playing basketball at the college level, so we are definitely moving in the right direction. If anything, it'll probably be 10, 15, 20, or even more years before a significant Dominican presence is seen in the NBA. I honestly don't see any other group (including Dominicans) overtaking African-Americans in basketball in the U.S. , but hey, Anything is possible. That is what I think the underlying message is with this topic. Dominican domination (or making their mark) in baseball in the Major League began with Ozzie Virgil, Sr. in 1959, followed by Juan Marichal in 1960, and the rest as they say, is history. The same thing can possibly happen with the NBA, but time will eventually show us if this is to be true.

RE: NBA the Dominican Impact!
actually, JEM, there is no reason why, in the future, Dominicans will not dominate the NBA. there are mysterious reasons why some nations have a gift for certain endeavours. the most pointed examples are in the uneven balance of Dominicans in the baseball leagues. dominicans have the gift for the game. i remember when the West Indies dominated the game of cricket, a writer observed that west indians had wrists like whips, which made them swing the bat with greater ease. maybe the same applies to dominicans in baseball. the second example is found in the ability of sprinters from trinidad, black america( if i can call it that), the bahamas, cuba and jamaica. the entire population of the aforementioned groups is miniscule, but they own that sport. my discomfort is with the use of the term Dominate. making one's mark and dominating are not remotely the same. pointing out the difference is not anal, because the two concepts are so remotely different. Tim Duncan might dominate the court on certain nights, as might Kobe, but they do not dominate the NBA

Ce Jota, that was a spectular performance last night by Al Horford. but it is a little early in the day to be comparing him to Ewing, The Dream, and Tim Duncan. it is just his sophomore year; Hakeem and Ewing are in the hall of fame; Duncan is surely headed there after he retires. he has all the potential to be one of the greats, but wait to see how this plays out. be careful not to jinx the poor guy!
