I researched your claim that Boston was the last team to break the color barrier and was surprised that it is indeed a fact.

Why would that surprise you? Boston is arguably the most racist city in the northeast. And I'm not saying that at a distance. I used to be a resident of Lawrence, MA.

Why is it that people are still surprised by the fact that the aristocratic north is more racist than the agrarian south? didn't you know Glimmer that the term "passing" (as in, hiding one's "true" race) was invented in the north?

The Boston Red Sox were the last team to sign a Latin American-born ball ballplayer.

The Boston Red Sox were the last team to open a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic.

For those reasons alone they mightily suck in my book.

Some already mentioned the fact that Ted Williams was half Mexican.

Laut:

hmm... let me see..... i'll try to explain candidly....

the north was side that fought for abolishment of slavery...
the north star is what refugees followed to freedom....

but all that is really besides the poing .. why? bcs NY is northern too,....

my surprise comes bcs my old man had a hatred towards the yankees citing their racism towards minorities.... thus im surprised that he didnt hateboston too.....

Howver, im a new fan (six years) to Boston and didnt know that little piece of history....

STILL they are a warmer team than the Yankees!

haha

"the north was side that fought for abolishment of slavery..."

That's false. The north fought for no such thing. But that's a converasation for another thread.

Ted Williams held animosity for the Boston organization for making him hide his heritage.

Ted Williams was very instrumental in getting all the Negro league ballplayers into the baseball Hall of Fame.

TED WILLIAMS - 1966
HALL OF FAME INDUCTANCE SPEECH:

Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel. Not just to be as good as anybody else, but to be better. This is the nature of man and the name of the game. I hope some day Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson will be voted into the Hall of Fame as symbols of the great Negro players who are not here only because they weren't given the chance.

As time goes on I'll be thinking baseball, teaching baseball, and arguing for baseball to keep it right on top of American sports, just as it is in Japan, Mexico, Venezuela, and other Latin American and South American countries. I know Casey feels the same way. . . . I also know I'll lose a dear friend if I don't stop talking. I'm eating into his time, and that is unforgivable. So in closing, I am greatful and know how lucky I was to have been born an American and had the chance to play the game I love, the greatest game."
