Why is it that there are so many Haitians moving to DR and changing their last names to Spanish surnames? Have you ever wondered that? The Dominicans that are decedents of other nations, like the Dominicans of San Pedro de Macorís have not changed their surnames to fit in. |

Like Haitians, the Chineses do the same thing when they move to US. Why? American people cannot pronounce the words and symboles in mandarin and other chinese languages, so Chinese people make things easier for them, they just use an English surname. For instance, how American will pronounce this name ???, ???? Then ???, ??? had to change his surname in Bruce Jun Fan Lee. It is the same situation for Haitian people in Dominican Republic. Dominican people can only understand Castellano and they cannot properly pronounce words in French, Creole, English, ... So Haitian people made things easier for them and use surname that Dominican people can pronounce. Edited on 5/6/2009 9:35 PM by zanzave. |

It's the same reason when someone of X country is comming here in Quebec, a french language province, For example, Marianna is an easy name. But sometime here in QC people would choose at equal part of competence the quebecer. So Marianna will change is name intro " Marìan " for an easy adaptation. An other example, my name is Eric, If I was living in a spanish country I would probably took " Rico" our Henrique as little name for an easy pronunciation... |
