Misunderstandings among latinos..
This morning I was having an intersting conversation that was funny as well...it concerned the misunderstandigs that occur to latinos among each other here in the states because of the differences in meanings and connotations that certain spanish words have for different spanish-speaking groups.

An example:

One time I was with a Cuban freind and I told him in Spanish "Tengo que quitarme el pajon". To Dominicans, "pajon" means alot of hair (usually used when someone requires a haircut). After some hesitation, my Cuban freind turns to me and says "Eso e' como elgo personal, sere". I found his respopnse strange. After probing deeper he tells me that to him "Un pajon es tremendo paja"..LOL.(paja for both cubans and dominicans"paja" is a slang word that means masturbation). In other words he understood me as saying that I had to masturbate something terrible..LOL

Anybody else got any examples such as the above?

Cuero is the word that mexicans use to talk about a very pretty/hot girl, while we dominicans use that word when talking about whores/putas.

Another misunderstanding is that, when mexicans say "ahorita", they're talking about something on the moment, and not like us, to whom "ahorita" means after an hour or two.

I have one with that word as well...One day I walked into a bodega where the cashier was being manned by a mexican..I asked him where something was located and he told me pointing "por ahi guero"..."Guero" is a word that mexicans use for lightskinned people..I heard "cuero", to which I treplied "cuero e' tu madre"..His answer? " No, no. Mi madre era india igual que yo." LOL I kid you not.

To Puerto Rican a 'bicho" is a dick........to Dominicans and perhaps other nationalities it means "an insect".

It goes without saying I much rather not have a Puerto Rican call me a "bicho". JAJAJA.

Come on brodel, you know that to some of us even saying "salgo ahora mismito, te veo en 5" means "llego en 3 horas". JAJAJAJA.

I had to say it.

Another mexican slang is "lana" which they use when talking about money, "no hay lana".

What about "quenepa"?.

The only reason I've known all my life it means "limoncillo" was because my mom's dad was Puerto Rican.

RE: Misunderstandings among latinos..
To most of LatinAmerica the word indio is frequently used in a demeaning & insulting way(savage, backward, dumb, ignorant, low class, etc.). Dominicans, and also Cubans and Puerto Ricans use the word indio in a different way.
I am very aware of this fact, but some off the boat Dominicans are not.

Example of what a good looking Colombiana told me:

Dominican guy: Diablo, que indiecita mas linda!
Colombiana: A quien to llamas india? india tu madre.

To my non-Dominican posters the Colombiana was a well shaped good looking brownskinned woman with long black hair, she didn't actually look an Apache, she just happened to fit the 'india' category.
