The demonstrations were being carried out by grassroots groups in Licey Al Medio, a town in the northwestern province of Santiago, and in several communities outside the northern city of Moca. Osvaldo Brito, spokesman for the group behind the protests, told Efe that several communities had been occupied by police Swat teams who detained numerous youths as they were heading to their places of work and study. “Today we have more than a score of detainees, not to mention the seven people who were held indiscriminately by the police (on Tuesday),” Brito said. The activist said protest organizers had been invited to meet with area business leaders and Catholic Church representatives with the aim of reaching an agreement to halt the general strike. However, he stressed that no solution will be possible if the police does not put a halt to its repressive actions and release the detainees. Among their conditions for ending the strike, the protesters are demanding that the government agree to build more hospitals and clinics and improve potable water and electricity service. The detonation of homemade explosives could be heard early Wednesday, while shops remained shuttered, traffic was nonexistent and educational activities were affected. Police spokesman Col. Jesus Cordero Paredes, meanwhile, said that drivers trying to make their way between the communities affected by the demonstrations had had their car windshields pelted by stone-throwing protesters. People still really dress up in Santiago, even if it's to go down the block. Buy your own beer and hang aound the monumento area, it can't get any less expensive than that |
