Let's not forget that an influx of Asians and Jews --and their descendants-- have altered the percentages of "mixed" people in the country-- by raising it, that is. I for one, have parents that are both Dominican, yet I am also mixed with Taino, (my grandmother is a direct Mestiza, something very rare on the island...) Korean, French, Spanish, and German blood. Upon searching Google images I was a little upset to find that many images show only the darker side of the island and so a foreigner doing the same search might label us a certain way and form stereotypes. Because things of that nature tend to install preconceived notions of what Dominicans are "supposed" to look like, Dominicans that have slightly different appearances are sometimes thought to be foreign when they shouldn't be. For example, in my family some people look similar to this....(NOTE: THE PEOPLE IN THESE IMAGES ARE NOT NECESSARILY DOMINICAN) ![]() ![]() ![]() And they are still Dominican. We cannot limit ourselves in saying that the demographics of Dominican Republic are composed of Mulatto, Black and White. We must include other categories as well. Though I'm wary of your first post being in a racially charged and sensitive thread which are usual indicators of someone being a troll, well said. |

And I am a Dominican, it's just that I'm a REAL mulatto and I never get confused for black and I still acknowledge that I have black in me and I'm not dick riding a bunch of spaniards. I'm not one of those dominicans who are 2% white from slave rape and want to be spaniards and wish more germans would come to DR. I am an actual, roughly 50% black and 50% white Dominican, a true mulatto. Who cares what you are nor what you think. I know what my country is (I live in it) and I know what the people I see on a daily basis at work, waiting for buses and cars, in restaurants and supermarkets and in schools look like and most of them are Mulattos! If you came here and went to a batey and got stuck with a bunch of black people then ofcourse you probably would think Dominican Republic is predominantly black but all you have to do is drive around the city and see that Mulattos are clearly the majority in this country. Don't give me that crap. My wife grew up en un campo del Cibao and soon after she reached her teens, she made her first trip to La Capital. She vaguely recalls seeing a few mulatoes working the land on the family farm, but the vast majority of the people she met and saw were white Dominicans. It was not until that trip, she had never seen seen so many black people together in one place, in fact she did not even realize or was aware that the DR had that many people of color. Her experience was very interesting and at the same time ironic that in the very same country, you have two individuals with two totally different perspectives and realities of what they thought is the ethnicities of the DR. Hell, when I fly into the Cibao internatioal airport the vast majority of the airport staff, workers, employees and general personnel are very light skin, to white or made up of the true triple Dominican racial mix. In fact not only are they lighter, but are so much nicer, more polite and well mannered. However, when I fly into the "las Americas Int'l" soon after arrival and getting off the plane, you would think that you are in Africa. Most people that are visible appear to be black or dark skin mulato. They also tend not to be friendly but are rather rude and arrogant, particularly the customs agents and many of the other gov't employees always making an attempt to hustle money off of you. Never felt like that in the Cibao airport. I guess it all depends on the region of the DR where you are located will determine the predominate race of the people. Question to the Dominicans residing in DR or those familiar: -I've read that the Chinese are the 2nd largest group (after Haitians) in DR. How common is seeing a Dominican with visible Asian admixture? I ask because I've seen them pop up on various photos of Dominican people. |

Depends where you go..in La Vega and Bonao you'll bump into Chinese-Dominicans, more so in the latter...in Constanza you'll find Dominicans with recent Asiatic admixture but that's due to some Japanese that settled in the area during the Trujillo era...once, I was driving with a cousin down the FDR drive and we noticed a chinese looking person with a Dominican coat of arms hanging from their rear view mirror...we screamed something at him in Spanish and he replied back, in loud, unmistakable Dominican Spanish..LOL..another time I went to a Dominican parade many years ago and bumped into two chinitas with Dominican flags..turned out they were VERY Dominican indeed...so yea, they're out there. Thanks, I knew I wasn't imagining some Asiatic feautres on some random individuals. Yes, it is a lot more common then you would expect. I have also seen some beautiful mixture of Asian/Dominican females. For me it was quite impressive. They were fortunate enough to have inherited the best traits from each culture and race. But it could have been the other way around as well. That reminds me of a guy who complained because he was half black and half white. "Well what's wrong with that? You are fortunate enough to belong to both races."Why are you complaining? You should be proud and happy about" I said. "Well not really," he responded. "Well why wouldn't you be happy? Exasperated he replied, "Well you know damn well, that I am half black and half white, right....,? Well yes, so what happened, what about it ? I insisted and requested an explanation. "Tell me what is the problem?" Well, I ended up with bad hair and a small penis........ Edited on 11/6/2009 9:48 PM by guillermone. |
