It's sad that there are so many Michael Jackson-like transformations among famous Dominicans. Dominicans ridicule Sammy Sosa, but never say a thing about Bonny Cepeda, Fernando Villalona, Los Kenton etc. So if a White person or lighter skinned person deliberately tans to acquire darker skin is that self-hating? If a woman doesn't like her breast and gets implants is that self-hating? As per your logic any form of vain cosmetic adjustment is self-hatred. ![]() I am "An Army Of One" ![]() Come Get Some!!. |

If you don't feel the self-hatred is a shame, you should at least feel ashamed at how feminine they're being. I guess you are talking about your so called Dominican father and grandfather because non of mine nor the thousands of Dominican men I see on a day to day in Santo Domingo relax their hair. Sorry to hear that about the Dominican men in your family being girly but I guarantee that does not apply to most Dominican men. Edited on 3/18/2010 5:48 PM by ojedamaggiolo80. |

If you don't feel the self-hatred is a shame, you should at least feel ashamed at how feminine they're being. Black men in the Anglo-Caribbean and West/Central Africa bleach their skin. Not anywhere near the majority or even a large minority of them do this but a visible amount partake in this often female attributed practice. Many urbanized Black American males texturize their hair...again not the majority or even a large minority do this but a visible amount do. None of these behaviors equate to self-hatred. It's more or less an inferiority complex reinforced by social and or cultural norms ( natural Black African hair is bad hair, dark skin is ugly) . Think about it this way. Nobody who wore afros in the 60s or 70s wears them now. Why because the cultural and social norms on an international scale changed away from Africanness towards a generic commercial popular culture. If you really look at it African influence was the most prominent in the Americas during the 70s. The paradigm will eventually shift towards Asianness. Also, the only men who can truly be considered girly men are homosexual men whom are effeminate. Edited on 3/18/2010 7:37 PM by mandouafrika. |

You're being biased and you don't even realize it. I'm pretty sure the DR produces far more than just entertainers and baseball players. |

Women straightening their hair is so common in the african diaspora, it isn't even worth mentioning at all. And spending hours fixing your hair is for Women, the fact that many famous Dominican MALES spend hours maintaning their hair relaxed. Look at the hair texture difference between Angel Villalona in the 80's and him now, he has BONE STRAIGHT asiatic hair, same with Bonny Cepeda. Can you imagine how many hours at a beauty salon it would take to maintain that type of hair? Chango ta' veni. |
