Domestic violence in the Dominican Republic: An abused women's shelter

Domestic violence in the Dominican Republic occurs at an alarming rate. For example, in 2007 there were 485 reported cases with 117 fatalities in Santo Domingo alone. In many cases women and children are forced to stay in abusive situations and lack the resources to leave. Thus, their physical and mental health is greatly affected.

Fundación Familia Sana, a non-profit organization, established the only known shelter for abused women in the Dominican Republic in 2001. Through the Secretary of State of Women, women and their children can now seek refuge at the shelter which is located in a small rural undisclosed town.

This study sought to understand the demographics of women who utilize the shelter's services and to determine the efficacy of the shelter in terms of the women's overall health. A multi-method approach, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, was employed to complete this comprehensive assessment. The study focused on how domestic abuse has affected the women's physical and mental health and the overall impact of the services on their well-being. Results indicate that the shelter helped to provide immediate assistance to those that sought refuge. Women received primary health care and legal counseling while their children received educational services. However, there is a need for mental health and long term services that would greatly benefit the women. Overall, findings from this study have added to the understanding of domestic violence, an under-reported and understudied phenomenon in the Dominican Republic.

The EXTREME poverty in which most families live in the Dominican Republic has led women to seek employment opportunities; nonetheless, the problems of unemployment and discrimination that victimize women has forced many to turn to prostitution as a means of subsistence for themselves and their families.

Women who work as prostitutes are exposed to particular types of violence. A study by one non-governmental organization identified some of the main problems of violence experienced by women working as prostitutes in the Dominican Republic: physical violence during the sexual act; assault on the street; gang rape; and psychological violence through the constant denigration by family members and acquaintances because of their way of life.

Another dimension of the problem of prostitution in the Dominican Republic is the trafficking of women, who in most cases are victims of deceit. The women are taken to other countries with a promise that they will obtain other types of employment, with better living conditions and good wages. Nonetheless, once outside the country they are easy prey to exploitation; their situation is further aggravated as they find themselves alone in strange surroundings.

According to a study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on the trafficking of women for purposes of sexual exploitation, it was found in 2005 and 2006 in several European countries that most of the women identified in such studies came from the Dominican Republic. According to a study done in Antigua, in 2002, Dominicans accounted for more than 60% of the women working in brothels. In addition, more than 60% of the prostitutes in the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht were Dominican women.

According to the information provided by the Government, the Centro de Investigación Integral created a help line to assist migrant women to help inform them of the social, economic, and cultural causes and consequences of migration abroad to be employed as sexual workers.

I AGREE WITH U 1OO% BRASIL. There is simply to much widespread domestic violence against women and children in my country. There is not a week thats goes by that I do not here on the news or from a relative about another incident of violence in the D.R. a low life loser dominican man committing a senseless crime against a female or child.

This has to stop, the government has to take a more serious stance against all this violence being committed against women in the Dominican republic. I agree with you.

Others can play and make fun about the situation in the dominican republic, but I am glad you brought the subject up Brasil, you seem to care a great deal about my country. You are right and this needs to be addressed,

I doubt that you will get it addressed here where most of the forum members are dominican men or dominican women who do'nt want to "rock the boat" here.

The insertion of Dominican women in the labor force has led to an expansion in the economically active population in the Dominican Republic. This growth is a consequence of the extreme poverty of a large part of the population and the lack of purchasing power of its inhabitants, which has forced women to work to support their families. Dominican men and others have simply exploited this situation. Resulting in wide spread abuse thru out my country.

Even though the increase in the participation of women in the economically active population has been sustained, in general, women in the Dominican Republic have scant opportunities to get adequate jobs with good salaries. This has led most of them to work in the free-trade zones, or zonas francas. Some as putas and sex slaves for foreigners and in many cases dominican men.

Men who do not work or own a business, but sell drugs and are involve in other crimes. Some survive on money send back home by sympathic family members or the European novios of their girlfriends. I have read a number of your posts about the subject of dominican men who simply do not work. YOU ARE RIGHT. Many do'nt. I hope we can address this growing problem in a humane and adult manner without all the games and wise cracks, again thanks for raising the subject.

I usually do'nt post alot of comments, I just sat back read and observe. But I am not afraid to "rock the boat" topdominicana". You and Brasil are absolutely correct. This is a much growing problem in the dominican republic. But we that have been rasied in the Dominican Republic know that this problem has been going on for many, many years.

It needs to be addressed. I really do'nt care about what color is Micheal Jackson, the American Economy, haitians, I care more about my dominican sisters and little kids who are the vitims of these violent acts by Dominican men. I think there should be a national forum on this subject.

Thanks Brasil for bringing it up. You will have my support.

I truly hope we are all on the same page on this one. It will take a whole generation, beginning with educating the kids. There was a time in NA history when men prided themselves on being "gentle-men" regardless of there social status. The were there to protect their women (moms wives, duaghters) and taught their sons the same.

In the DR, was it always thus or is this more recent in terms of extent? The Educators will have to start at the lowest level teaching kids what is appropriate. Each person who sees or observes any of this must stop it and deal with the man. At least once a year (in our hotel) we have a man get out of hand. We protect the woman, toss him out. But she goes right back to him the next day or sooner.

So the women need to take a stand also!
