Agencies to halt illegal timber along Dominican-Haitian border

Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and Border Security Corps (Cesfront) director Santo Domingo Guerrero affirmed that the depredation of the natural resources along the border has increased and announced that an operation to control the illegal trade in wood and charcoal will begin this week.

Fernandez said the cutting of trees is one of the reasons why Enriquillo Lake had overflowed to its highest point this year.

He said they’ll be a permanent vigilance along the border to stop that practice, on which dozens of Haitian and Dominicans have been detained for depredating the zone, adding that boats and gear for illegal fishing have also been seized and destroyed.

For his part Francisco Ovalle, of Army Intelligence, said there have been six cases of transport of precious wood and coal, brought from the border in the two last weeks.

Guerrero said in his tenure 139 people have been charged with environmental crimes, but expects more arrests once the operation begins to halt the depredation, which he affirmed is most common along the highways to Jimaní and the International, in the town Restauracion.

The only purpose of posting this matter is an attempt by you to lead us to believe that the Environment minister has some relationship with you. You want to be a "dominican elite" so bad that it is burning in your poor low class snitchin blood. g-man.

So we have both our Dominican nationals and Haitians illegally entering the country engaging in this depredation. I already know why the Haitians do it, and I'll guess the Dominicans involved in this do it because of?Povery, lack of education, greed? This article just reminded me of various convo. I've had with Dominicans here talking about the drying up of various rivers in the Azua/San Juan area as well as Jarabacoa/Constanza.

It's more than the environment that causes the rivers to overflow. Maybe if the Government officials stop stealing all the money and bulit some levees, then maybe this problem can be addressed. But until the school system is fixed, the attitudes have changed and the currupt government officials are overthrowned and jailed, we will never get anything meaningful accomplished in my country.
