But at the same time destroying Dominican culture and the Dominican treatment that the tourists love... I don't think there is much choice! The border is impossible to patrol. There is trade between the two countries so containers come and go - border towns where cross border traffic is usual. US will dictate to DR to keep border open since they don't want major trouble in Haiti. The hope is that the Haitians, who are capable of working hard, bring more unproductive Dorminican land into production to feed the increased population. S. S. |

Between Dominican Rep. & Haiti well, ABC, even if the USA demands that the DR keep the border open to avoid problems in Haiti, there will be problems...in the DR. one would have to be absolutely insane to believe that the cross border movements can remain status quo. the Population of Haiti is roughly the same as the DR. if 25% of those people decide to move here, and it is a distinct possibility, there is no way that such a society can be sustained. none. |

It depends what they do. There are areas of the DR where smallholdings have been deserted by Dominicans - others where plantations have been divided and are let out to Haitians. Some Hatians - not all are good with pigs and yams and chickens and a couple of hecrares can feed a family. Singapore has about 40 % immigrants and does well. S. |
