Tell a Dominican hes black and they'll laugh in your face, doesn't change what they are Dominicans are a blend of many different racial groups. I think its not correct to place a single racial label on them for the sake of bashing them. There are a great deal of Dominicans living in both the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the United States who are extremely successful. They made the necessary sacrifices to enjoy the successes they experience today and I have a great deal of respect for them. Some of these individuals do'nt have the education that most others have who are successful, but they did other things right and now have been rewarded for it. Dominicans are some very beautiful and loving people and I enjoy their continued hospitality. I despise those who are racists, who judge people by the color of their skin and will continue to do so. But to sat here and bash an entire group of people is wrong. There are a number of posters here who are not decent individuals, but they do not in anyway represent the vast majority of Dominicans I have met here in the D.R. who are kind, decent , loving and happy people. They are of many ancestry, Black, European, Indian, Chinese, Jewish, Italian, and many others. They are Dominicans. Racism has no place in a civilized society and I think that people who engage in it are doing a great disservice to the latino community. We are in this struggle together. the struggle for a better life for our families, jobs and a better education and opportunity for our kids, better government for our people, Latinos Unidos, hoy, manana y siempre! However Maximo Taveras said it’s difficult to determine the exact number of Dominicans living in Puerto Rico and pledged the Consulate’s assistance in a census to establish the exact figure. The Dominican diplomat also asked Dominicans there to obey Puerto Rican Law, in reference to areas frequented by undocumented people in the area of Toa Bja, on the island’s north. He said he’ll try to solve the problem of the illegal presence of Dominicans in Toa Baja, where since several months ago they’ve been erecting illegal housing which lacks the permit for residential use. As to his compatriots’ illegal arrival at Puerto Rico’s west coasts, Taveras said the tendency has been substantially reduced in the last months due to police pressure from his country and the island’s federal authorities. Source: diariolibre.com.do where are the people who where saying that they were only 70 000 dominicans in Puerto Rico ? How those numbers grow up like this ? please answer me. (Reproduction baby-- latinos breed like rabbits) These undocumented immigrants should be provided assistance in obtaining better living conditions, so that they will not have to erect these type of living quarters. They are there on the Island, some contirbuting to the growth of the economy. I think the U.S. government should legalize the status of those who are demonstrating a williness to be law abiding, productive members of the community there. There is also a small criminal element of Dominicans there who create a bad reputation for the positive individuals who are contributing to the economy. This element should be singled out, jailed and deported. I'd bet the same Dominicans who want Haitians out of the DR would agree with you Why do you want to lose money like that? |

But as stated above by La Chilidrina herself the numbers are incredibly different. We have much more Haitians among us. |

Many of those same Dominicans think their country is the best in the world, obviously disregarding or downplaying the severity of the social issues that plagues their society much as almost every other developing society. However what does "better" really mean? Wealth? Living standards? If that's the case then yes, Dominicans are better than Haitians generally speaking. However the character of Haitians in general (at least in Haiti, discounting the migrants) are the same as every other Caribbean people; warm, humble, proud of their history, hardworking. Economics has nothing to do with character. Americans are no more "better" than citizens of so-called failed states in terms of who they are as a people. And those Dominicans that chastise, degrade, and demean Haitians in such racist, bigoted, hateful manners only portray their own insecurities of themselves, and their people, and actually represent their country negatively. You shouldn't have to insult and demonize another country in order to feel better about yours. I know who I am talking too, so those rational, open-minded Dominicans should pay no mind to my post, and my post refers to all nationalities. Edited on 8/3/2009 6:56 PM by Nesst0r. |
