A while back I remember reading a quote attributed to Balaguer where he stated, and I'm paraphrasing, that whoever governed the republic once can eventually govern it again. Dominican history is replete with individuals who took several alternating turns sitting in the presidential chair so Balaguer had a historical context on which to draw his observation on, not to mention his own fortunes as far as the Dominican presidency was concerned. Taking Balaguer's observation into account, is it possible that a man such as Hipolito Mejia can somehow rehabilitate his public image and once again acheive the presidency? Some would think this impossible but I propose that at this current stage of development the Dominican electorate is so gullible that Hipolito can, somewhere in the near future, do just that! Remember also that there are historical precedents for heads of state who have so openly robbed the Dominican population coming back into power even though they fell into disgrace for a period (Buenaventura Baez). What do some of you think? Can Hipolito one day become president of the Dominican Republic again? It's a possibility, due to the fact that, nothwithstanding all the information available to the electorate due to the marvels of this technological age, the dominican voter is still prone to commit serious mistakes at the time of casting his/her vote, the main reason for this being the clientelistic nature of dominican politics, people would cast their vote according to the benefits that said politician would be capable of giving to them once the power is achieved, instead of casting their vote according to the governmental program of the candidates as it is done on other countries. So, yes, it could happen... but let´s hope it won´t |
