The best option and best name for our country could be : Punta Duarte. Why? 1. Because it emphasizes our historical, territorial, cultural and ethnic separation from the other republic on the island (Haiti). 2. Because Duarte is the father of our nation, just like is Simon Bolivar for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and Bolivia, etc... 3. Because almost ALL real Dominicans love, honour and respect Duarte. 4. Because Duarte deserves it. 5. Because it is a commercial name. 6. Because it is a beautiful name. 7. Because it is a name that can make all Duarteños proud. 8. Because it is a name that would look good on tourism brochures. Edited on 8/11/2009 4:46 AM by buenoha. |

I don't mind being called "Dominicans" (I use Quisqueyano as well around other Dominicans, foreigners would not know what the hell I speak of) but the name seems awkward. I usually say "Santo Domingo" as opposed to La Republica Dominicana. |

I often hear those sentiments expressed in a much more "hidden" way. Poor Chilidrina, everyone needed to see her emotional thrashing on this site. Edited on 8/11/2009 4:12 PM by ElTorodeCibao. |

I usually say "Santo Domingo" as opposed to La Republica Dominicana. From what I have read, the name Dominican comes from Santo Domingo, so it would not be a sacrilege to call the country as such, except for some lefty-lunatics and race baiters that would find it too colonial for their tastes. Without mentioning the fact that our neighbours to the west would find it annoying and bothersome, seeing as how close it is to their hated Saint Domingue.
