Environmental - Eco/Sustainable/AffordableHousing/Farming/Communities
This will be a post for all and any who want to know more about ecological, environmental, sustainable practices in all its aspects as it affects the Dominican Republic.Comments, ideas and suggestions to be shared to help build a better sustainable DR.

This is also a call out to any Taino or descendants living in DR who want to be more involved in the rebirth of their culture. Its not true that no Taino exist or are extinct in the DR. We are working with Academic scholars and other interested parties to build the Dominicans first truly eco sustainable communityThe Taino Cultural Village.

Welcome aboard MrNatural, this is a very interesting topic. In the DR we need innovative things to get the ball rolling and actually looking back at how our ancestors made the best out of their resources sounds like a great idea. Please post any links you may have about your projects. Do you belong to the Indigenous Carbbean Network??

To Mr vineyard would love to know how the grapes grow in DR, I love to make home made wine and have a press etc.

Re: Taino project I will have more information when I complete my meetings in near future but will keep all posted.

Re: Housing 300 years or more with stone housing, can I build one yes i can, I am stone mason, rice bale because there is lots of rice straw, can I build one yes I can, when time is right,I have already had a meeting with a top architect for affordable housing in D.R, more info when time is right,

Re:farming my style is organic biodynamic, all composting is made on site, vermiculture is the best organic fertilizer,(higher yields better tasting food etc etc, waste not want not, all leaves, fruit vegetable WASTE ETC, food stuffs, big list of best will follow,no meat products, that's another system more on that later,

I am interested in 25 people (families)who want to serious have an eco sustainable community. The first one in DR.

So now I will see what ind of feedback I get, who is serious who isn't and where we will go from here.I will met with any serious person or people on my return to the DR.

When time is right I will also tell you who I am working with etc etc etc.

The mind is like a tree that should have its roots deep in the ground if it is to stand firm and unshaken,The greater our appreciation and understanding of past and distance cultures, the deeper our roots and the stronger our tree will grow.

Indigenous people have known for thousands of years the the land is sacred.Europeans have tried to kill them all in the name of religion, industrialization and look where it got us.I could writ a dissertation on the subject, but I know there is no need, cause all who read this already know exactly what I would say and what I mean.

A healthy body is a healthy mind lets eat right, think right and be right ,so we can leave something for our children and future generations to inherit. After all we did not inherit anything, we are borrowing it from our children.

Will they remember us with awe and admiration, or scorn us with disgust or leaving them a dying planet.

Come on my friends fill in the gaps in this story, put in your thoughts and lets all try to come together and make the world a better place in which to live by doing our best, by doing are part.

Oh ya heirloom seeds, not seeds from big corporations who want us to believe organic food is BS.

mmmmmm tired now who's next!

dominican republic like other countries is not a white homeland, and never was, it is an indigenous homeland as is Canada, Unites States, Africa etc etc etc etc.Of course only educated, non racists, would know understand or appreciate that.

This forum is not open to any further discussions on this matter start your own topic, no room for it here.

I think the idea of eco-sustainable living is great, and like this thread because it shows it's not just something American liberals do.

Great. I am trying at the moment to open an eco-restaurant in the DR.
Featuring -
solar cooking, solar panels running fridges etc, low energy lighting, gradual replacement of furniture etc. with that made from bamboo grown on premises, organic produce, efficient thermal management. Would be interested in further details of eco-housing here in DR - expect to have a little informational material on display. Bulk preparation of food is eco-sound. Restaurants in the UK also focus on imroving nutrition. Restaurants, because they are often open long hours make good use of capital invested in energy saving equipment. Plus, according to friends in Brazil they have potential for use where there are no services without damaging the environment ( choping down trees etc ). All the time it is becoming more feasible - predictions are 1-2 dollars per watt for solar power in 2 years time.
