Drug Trade
How do you view the drugs in the Dominican Republic? A drug transhipment point only? or a major drug shipper and consumer? (The situation in the DR is getting out of hand)

RE: Drug Trade
I see it as a free trading zone where almost everyone can be bought in order to close their eyes, and where there is very little control and sophistication in the investigation of this kind of crime. You can clearly see how shipments with tens and hundreds of kilograms are sometimes caught when they're passing through the DR. Now just imagine how much doesn't get caught...

As far as consumer, I think the drug dealing on the streets is growing slowly but steadily. It didn't get to the levels of some of the developed countries but again, the micro trafficking can get to a very serious and dangerous problem since in my opinion it is also out of control, and police can be bribed easily. Also, criminals here aren't affraid of using guns, so it can get really nasty.

transhipment area yes!! problem the shipments are being paid in product not money at the front end. the money to handle shipment is coming from selling on the street to the local consumer.

What worries me the most is the large quantities that are normally seized. That gives you an idea of the size of the whole operations. Another problem is that the number of consumers grow, anytime they'll have to start robbing in order to satisfy their addiction, and that will only worsen the current criminal rate we live, specially in the city of Santo Domingo.

I thought it was the other way around: cheap because mixed with other substances to produce more portions per 'crude' drug.

By the way, I't surprises me the fast the young comunity is adopting drugs, specially kids from families which are in good economic condition. Drugs and alcohol in large quantities. Don't theese kids have parents? I mean, go to a Drinks 2 Go or any other liquer store in SD and you'll find all the kids with their alcohol and luxury vehicles parked there...
