i dont get it, why would anyone get into the politics of some tiny island country? Why worry about the politics and government of the country when you go to the beach and drink some pina coladas? your country is an irrelevant spec of land, noone cares about your country\'s politics, just enjoy the resorts for petes sake!

A patriot is someone who gives this guy a good one entre boca y nariz!

shutup. your country is about as relevent in the world of politics as Papa New Guinea. Noone cares about you tiny little caribbean islands and i see no reason why people in these countries would care about their country\'s politics or government. Your country is a joke and hasn\'t been on the colbert report, daily show, CNN, Fox, MSNBC or any political channel/show since your tiny little country got it\'s indipendence from spain.

Actually, recently the DR was mentioned in the colbert report for being a large sugar exporter, is that the best you guys can do?

Jimmy your ignorance is astounding, it may not be relevant to YOU since you don't live there, regarding those U.S. Media channels you mentioned, when was the last time they actually reported actual news? Not for a very long time.

Somewhere far from the realm of the patriot and the nationalist is a kind of creature I like to call a nationless bastard. These people have little sense of what it means to concretely care for a particular group, or be attached to the place your family is from. These kind of people emerge where cosmopolitanism is the norm, and national attachments are frowned upon. Often they do not have fathers, this is a big cause of the syndrome.

Cosmopolitanism ... this is a valuable phenomenon that can offer a host nation many benefits if allowed to flourish in its larger urban settings. It is good to be cosmopolitan in your tastes/interests, but in the end a person too committed to cosmopolitanism cannot be on the path of patriotism or nationalism.

George Washington:

I do not mean to exclude altogether the idea of patriotism. I know it exists, and I know it has done much in the present contest. But I will venture to assert, that a great and lasting war can never be supported on this principle alone. It must be aided by a prospect of interest, or some reward.

This last one is priceless, and one can't help but wonder about Duarte's continued devotion for this country, if one takes into account the rotten treatment that he would receive from his own people. There's no worse poison against any patriotic cause than the ingratitude of the people one is trying to defend.

That man is above a beyond a patriot precisely for this reason. When GW gave all he could give for the States, they wanted to make him KING! And Duarte, well...

Trust me, there are some days in which I wonder myself why do I bother in defending this country anymore. The amount of petty offenses and dissapointments just keep piling up.

And the fact that they could not even make good on the consul position!

I'm surprised they dug him up and brought him over.

Do you know the biggest irony of all? that the president to do so would be Ulises Heureaux, who as you know, was of haitian descent. And not only that, he would be the one to institute the tradition of naming him father of the fatherland.

An irony, all right....... that a thief and criminal like Heureaux, perhaps the second worse President the DR have had, the further thing from a PATRIOTA, saw what many didn't see in Duarte.
