Rangel introduces offshore tax-cheat bill

Every tax bill introduced by House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) is getting the once-over from the GOP, so it's no surprise they took note of a bill, introduced by Rangel and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) cracking down on offshore tax cheats.

The “Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act of 2009” -- introduced by Baucus and Rangel in conjunction with the Obama administration -- would mandate Individuals with offshore accounts provide details and list them on tax returns. Rules governing trusts would be "significantly strengthened" to prevent the true beneficiaries from hiding front entities.

“This bill offers foreign banks a simple choice – if you wish to access our capital markets, you have to report on U.S. account holders,” said Rangel, in a statement posted on the committee's homepage. “I am confident that most banks will do the right thing and help to make bank secrecy practices a thing of the past.”

Rangel has never been accused of committing any of the tax shelter shenanigans the bill targets, but he has admitted to underreporting assets on his House financial disclosure forms and reportedly failed to document income from a condo he owns in the Dominican Republic.

And that prompted this response from a National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Tory Mazzola: “Is tax-cheat Charlie Rangel really the best watchdog?... Maybe it’s because he knows where the loopholes are. He’s taken ‘do as I say not as I do’ to an embarrassing new low.

Panel Finds Rangel Broke House Rules With Caribbean Trip

A House panel has found that Rep. Charles B. Rangel of New York broke Congressional rules by failing to properly disclose financial details of a trip to the Caribbean, a House official said.

Mr. Rangel, who heads the House Ways and Means committee and who has served his Harlem district for nearly four decades, has been under investigation by two house subcommittees.

The guilty finding led to quick condemnation from Republicans, who have made the powerful congressman a frequent target.

“Once promised to be the ‘most ethical Congress in history,’ the Democratic majority now has a serious ethics scandal on its hands thanks in-part to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” said Ken Spain, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “For months, and even years, Nancy Pelosi has been promoting corrupt actors within her caucus ranks when she should have been punishing them.”

One of the two House panels began looking into Mr. Rangel after The New York Times reported that he was renting four rent-stabilized apartments in Harlem at a price that was well below market value, despite rules forbidding House members from accepting gifts worth more than $50.

The inquiry — which also included an investigation into whether he improperly used his office to raise money for an academic center named for him — later expanded after questions were raised about unreported taxable income Mr. Rangel received from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic.

At the same time, a second subcommittee was investigating a complaint from an ethics advocacy group that accused Mr. Rangel and four other members of Congress of violating restriction on accepting travel from donors who employ lobbyists by attending a conference last November in St. Maarten. The conference was sponsored by Citigroup, but Mr. Rangel reported in an amended disclosure form that his trip was paid for by the Carib News Foundation, which had underwritten his travels in the past.

It was that inquiry that resulted in the guilty finding by the House committee.

Where Is the Outrage When Black Conservative Tea Party Activists Are Called the N-Word?



Washington, D.C.: Black conservatives opposed to government-run health care routinely are called the "n-word" and worse -- by liberals, says Deneen Borelli, full-time Fellow with the Project 21 black leadership network.

To black lawmakers allegedly receiving the same treatment, Borelli said: "Welcome to my world! I've been called worse than the N-word by alleged enlightened liberals for the outrage of expressing my views on topics such as the threat of government overreach on things such as ObamaCare, climate change legislation, the Second Amendment and pro-growth economics."

"It should go without saying that racial slurs are offensive and uncalled for," added Borelli. "But progressives seem far more aggressive in hurling racist comments than Tea Party members. I find that all the time on my e-mail after I appear on television or radio."

Responding to comments made by Representative Charlie Rangel (D-NY) about the racial aspects and alleged racial tone of Tea Party rallies opposed to a government takeover of America's health care system, Borelli said: "In an attempt to inject race into the national debate about government running our nation's health care system, Representative Charlie Rangel made false allegations about the Tea Parties when he said that '[y]ou don't see any black folks in these groups. Ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.' Considering he's never invited me -- or any of his conservative colleagues, for that matter -- for insight on reworking one-sixth of our economy, he obviously must not realize I am black. He also failed to see the other black faces I've seen at the many tea party rallies I've attended and spoken at over the past few months."
