RE: DR as a regional power ???
The issue is "arms race" nation.

Would it be of benefit to the D.R. to enter into a military build up?
Salesmen trying to sell their wares have a motive. That is not the question.
Nor is individual leaders.

The question is would a military build up benefit the D.R.?
There are pluses and minuses.
Debt if the build up is with the D.R. credit is a negative.
If the build up is not debt to the D.R. would such a point of power be positive.
It may be, increasing good jobs and ability to influence good trade.

Jumping on the militarization band wagon has pluses and negatives, hinging on how that militariazation is financed, who foots the bill and how many jobs, good paying jobs, are created inside the D.R..

That seems to be the questions raised and the considerations to judge the proposal on.

I'd only say that to those who ended up in a grave (or worse) the difference between the two is not too great . Though I do understand what you guys are saying, and it emphasizes what I mean that too much is left to chance with authoritarianism. Will you get a Park Chung-hee or a Batista? At least with democracy you can say that if the people vote in an incompetent then they prob deserve whatever they get

I hear you but what about "Dictatorship with Popular Support" as suggested by Juan Bosch... I would trust him with such powers. He's a patriot... The problem is who today can be trusted with unchecked powers...

I do understand your position
