XOOM.COM MONEY TRANSFERS TO THE DR IS A NIGHTMARE
ATTENTION ALL DOMINICAN TODAY COMMUNITY.......

Many of you all have heard of a new service to transfer money called xoom.com. When I first saw their add on TV I thought I would give them a try.
Well little did I know that these guy’s are worse than the IRS. Their customer service is nonexistent (all automated email feed back), they never reply to any issues (even though they say they will), they hold your money for 7 days and mess up your accounts.
So Please be very careful when trying to us there service.
My family in the USA has also tried to use the service to send me money and they had the same problem.

If any one knows of a better service, please let us know.
I have an internet business where I get paid via paypal and I need to transfer funds from paypal to the DR.

I tried it - it does not work. Wire transfers are cheapest over about 500 dollars. 25 dollars ( or some are free - ) in US and 10 dollars here to credit the account. Ameritrade does it fee under certain circumstances. Another way is to order a prepaid visa card by post and use that. Mail via CPS is usually good.

I know that you can do wire transfers and what not, but what I am trying to do is transfer funds from my PayPal account. If anyone has any other options other than xoom please let me know. Xoom is the worst service ever. I have sent messages to customer support and they never reply. That is very bad business. I think they don't want to deal with the Dominican Republic. If that is the case they should take it off the web site as a place to send money to.

The Best way to send money to family on a continual basis is to set up an US "Family" bank account with the same Bank and send or deliver the family the ATM card. You can control deposits in the US via online access. The Intl ATM charges are usually minimal. You designate how much and when they will pick up by coordinating your bank deposits. Plus there is a limit on ATM withdrawals.

e.g,

I have an account that when family needs money I transfer funds from my Bank account to the Family "bank account number" online and advise family when to withdraw from the ATM, and keep all receipts. It is also important that they are consistent and withdraw from ONE (1) Dominican Bank only. This will reduce the possibility of problems ie. fraud, tech glitches etc. In addition if there is a problem it will simplify correcting any issues.

Last year I had an issue where the ATM hiccuped and debited the account twice. I contacted my US bank and they had Banco Popular confirm transactions and reconcile the ATM receipts. My US account was credited immediately.

Prior to this I would send via local Dominican money transfers but found this to work more efficiently.

So, you don't like what's happening in DR....

I have used zoom many times and it works well... alot cheaper than western union. I just make sure to have the money delivered to a home address and paid in USD. Also, you can choose differant carriers, I use caribe express and it works well. Don't know where you are sending money but I send from USA to Santiago with no problems

I have been using this service for a year and I have no complaints.
With all the messengers getting killed or ripped off evreyday, I can understand they take some time to deliver money in some dangerous and suspicious neighborhoods.
I hope that the poster is not promoting another transfert service to the detriment of Xoom.

Even when they have gone to make the home delivery and no one was home, they did call the cell phone provided when making the money transfer and delivered the money when the person was home. That is good service

Get a debit card from Paypal, then you can access the funds with the debit card.

The absolute best and simplest way to send monthly to family in the DR is to:

1) open an account in a U.S, Canada or Europe bank that has branches in the DR. Open the account in your name (and the name of another person you trust); then

2) Get two ATM cards.

3) Send (or deliver it when you visit) the card along with the PIN number to your relatives in the DR.

4) Set up a date when you will deposit (in or around the first, middle or end) of the month is easy to remember.

-DONE-

If you set it up so that every month you put money in it; you won't even have to worry about your relatives calling you at all hours hitting you up for more...and the transaction costs are non-existent

If you are trying to bring that person over to the US immigration will want to see xoom/western union reciepts under the person's name to help prove that this is a real relationship. With the ATM card, there is not much proof of who pulled the money out of the accounts
