The past is the past.

Haiti should focus on fixing its current problems and entering a debate of who had it worst, unless its to just kill some time, is meaningless.

vacanos, don't even play that game with the kid because it will detract his focus from the issue at hand. WHich is that haiti needs to better its economy and people. Perhaps when he is an adult he can go back and help fix his ailing country.

carpe diem!!!

I fully agree that too much debate takes place about THE PAST. Yes, it's necessary to not make mistakes and studying the past helps us understand some similarities, but in the end we must focus on the now and future developments of our respective nations. And I also consider it wise policy to not focus entirely on just our side of the border. President Carter was correct, certain issues have to be addressed by both nations. In addtion, the DR should create an effective documentation system and humane policy with respect to illegal Haitians. I see no possibility that a total ban could ever be implemented and the DR as with all modern nations must enter into an effective visa and temporary work permits program to gain credibility and honesty on this issue. It ill serves our DR to allow this situation to continue and get worse.

Yes, i agree. Yet I will conceed that this responsibility should not be placed squarely on our shoulders. DR is a third world country we have a hard enough time providing for our own people and that is evident because dominicans continue to take yolas to get to US and PR. So the international community specifically but not limited to US and France must help haiti. So I am conceeding that we must look at her past to see who has caused some (not all) of haitis ills and US and France are culprits.

One more thing is that as much as some of these ultra-nationalist want all haitians out of the country, one must recall that dominican businesses have benefited much from the cheap labor and that a future with no haitians is impossible. Many young dominicans aren't willing to accept such low wages. So don't look so down at haitians because with out them we wouldn't be so high.

Last much depends on the actuall number of haitians living in DR, no one knows for sure 5%-22% are the high and low figures. Each figure merits a different response.
