Conflict brewing
Dominicans in Costa Rica and in the DR have taken offense at comments in the Costa Rican newspaper Diario Extra where journalist Mario Ugalde writes negatively about Dominicans living in the country. Ugalde comments specifically about a sector of the city of the capital San Jose known as "Tierra Dominicana," where there is a large Dominican emigre community. According to Listin Diario, Ugalde described the Dominicans who live there as "lazy" and "shameless." According to Ugalde, they sell drugs like cocaine out of ice cream shops and prostitute children out of a hair salon. Ugalde even called for Costa Rica to expel all Dominicans. "People can no longer take their kids to the parks because weed smokers are there, we can't go out at night because they will rob us, we can't buy a nice cell phone because they will stab us for it, Costa Rica is ours, lets get rid of this mafia."

First of all it's shameful, and I hope that la policia Tica dismantle the mafia that has established in the zone known as "Tierra Dominicana"; however it seems that it's not only dominicans that are involved, it's a complex nest of dominican and colombian rats that their presence have filled part of the center of San Jose with a terrible sense of unease.
Take a look and draw your own conclusions:

RE: Conflict brewing
I just spoke to a friend who lives in San Jose and he confirmed the article. He is Dominican, but he's been living there for several years now and has a Costarican residency. He has done very well for himself opening several businesses and selling them on. Apparently the worse of DR is mingling with the worse from Colombia and you guys can only imagine. What a pitty for our reputation. When I went there over a decade ago, we had a great standing there. I was treated very well and heard nothing but good comments about us.

A friend went to CR de vacaciones and said that place was worse than the 80's and 90's Washington Heights, drug-wise.

I spoke to him last night and touched this subject but he also says that Colombians AND Costa Ricans are in "association" with the Dominicans.....NOT just Dominicans like that Costa Rican journalist wants to make it seem.

But he also told me, again, that he was somewhat embarrassed to say he was Dominican while there.

Now Domincans can see how haitians feel.

If you've noticed every Dominican that chimed in has expressed their dismay and embarrassment towards the situation that initiated this thread and some have even called for the dismantling of this "community" of our "compatriots" and for their deportation from Costa Rica...with that said are you calling for the deportation of all Haitians on Dominican soil or are you chastising something that the Haitian community in DR is doing? Otherwise your post makes no sense in the context of this thread.

RE: Conflict brewing
What's the big deal here?, I don't give squat about what the general Costa Rican public may think about Dominicans. There is only one people which I really regard, and I care about it's advancements, and it's not the Costa Ricans, which I couldn't care less if they all disappeared tomorrow.

Besides, those roaches well deserve the reputation for selling drugs.
