What do you need on holiday - pair of crox or two, beach shorts, lightweight crumple proof suit for evenings, very lightwieght clothing a silk dress weighs 2-3 ounces. Easy to carry on. Maybe your kindle so you have something to read and a camera. 4 people at the Aleisi here in LT stayed for 100 dollars a night and they rated it well - the lady being in professional motel management rated it highly.
They BBQ'd fresh fish on the terrace and enjoyed beautiful ocean, gardens, pool.
For Americans who are really hard up staying at a campsite or in the wilderness in their local national park would cost less. Perhaps save up for an airfare the following year - I forgot Americans do not save they spend.

larimar is not only a unique and beautiful gift but a good investment. Also a rolled up artwork weighs little and if chosen carefully and is by an upcoming artist is sure to be a worthwhile gift. . Some galleries will ship direct to your home in the US by FedEx etc. Both Dominican and foreign artists practice here in a wonderful environment. For example Ofir Hirsh
http://www.ofirhirsh.com/index.php
Charlie Simon:
http://www.samanadreams.com/artist.php?artist=4
So unique, wonderful and beautiful gift opportunities that are easy to transport.
You sojourn with nature here in LT willl be richly rewarded.
For Charlie Simón Las Terrenas has been the greater source of inspiration. As per his own words "It is here where I found that scent to nature that I consider so important for my inspirations. I invite all the lovers of the Arts and the Nature to come to share with us" . - Charlie Simon.
Always picked up no heavy suitcases to lug around.

people do not want art. You can give them something that they can actually use like clothes or cash

Now more airlines flying from USA to DR are charging customers baggage fees??? What the F. After paying the most taxes in the carribean now we have to pay for the check in bags? I flew Delta last year and the had no bag fees to DR. Now Delta wants to charge $30 for the second bag. I think that American airlines does not charge, but they don't have the best flight costs.
Here are the ones that I know of:
Spirit - 1st bag $20, second $25 each way
Delta - 1st bag free, second bag $25 each way
Jetblue - 1st bag free, second bag $20 each way
Last I heard AA had no bag fees to DR
Does anyone have info on the rest?

This is getting out of control! Are they going to charge us per toilet tissue square used?
Do it the smart way, like I do...........leave your "vacation" clothes in your house (or relative's) in the DR then travel with two carry-on bags.

Has worked for me for over 20 years!.

That would be nice but I always like to take 2 bags so I can take stuff for the family.
Is your maid's husband wearing your clothes while you are gone???
At times it's less complicated/stressful to send the stuff you will give your family BEFORE you get there........(refer to the PM I sent you a few minutes ago).

One thing I MUST say:

I don't remember the last time I waited to pick-up my luggage after getting there........most of the times I am the first one out.

When the "inspectors" see my two bags, they don't even bother to look at them......they wave us out......

They probably tell themselves: "two little bags, why bother.....those with all those maletas, those I the fishes that we want"...JAJAJAJA.

And noooooo, nobody is wearing my clothes......I keep them locked in locked rooms.

Aleisi - how much are they paying you this is the second time you are rooting for them - not saying it is a bad thing!

It costs Air CAnada $10,000 everytimne they land a plane at the Toronto Airport!

In China they allow people to stand in the aisles - like the Metro! Maybe that willbring costs down! Take out all the seats and we can stand.

If they start charging for toilet use people will piss in a bottle - at least the men will!

RE: Now we have more airline baggage fees?
I guess a handbag doesn't weigh too much - you can pick one up on the way to the airport. A small gold bar is also good for a rainy day.... My friends in the UK like jewelry and art.
http://www.louisvuitton.com/us/flash/index.jsp?direct1=home_entry_us
Clothes are easy - I have some of these bags and a pump. Space Bags are good.
http://www.amazon.com/Space-Bag-5-Pc-Vacuum-Storage/dp/B000M9QD5U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1255712603&sr=8-1
Not bad for 19 dollars.

This way what used to be hold luggage is hand luggage.
And no chance of the airline loosing your luggage - and fewer delays in customs - and no waiting in the baggage hall. If your suits are linen a small steam brush or travel iron may be required. Marino seems ok after hanging out. wrinkle free stetch fabrics are also good - convertible pants save taking shorts or changing. These are good...

Hope this helps.....
