It is almost funny to see how some people think that cutting trees and then replanting them solve the deforestation problem.

I am not an expert on the subject but many of these common things are learn in the primary schools.

It takes years for a young tree to shed enough leaves to make humus for the surrounding areas.

Young trees without mature trees near by to shelter them are more exposed to the elements and have less chances of surviving unless human hands protect and handle them.

The fallen leaves enrich the soil with the minerals the soil needs. If the mature trees are cut down, how is the soil going to rejuvenate?

Yes popon I seen that excuse over and over here in the site. Even by planting new trees where is the security that it won’t be chopped? I mean whatever happened to the 60 million trees planted over the last 20 year in Haiti by the USA. I tell you what been happening they keep chopping them down.

right! with a good idea comes a counter attack that destroys even the possibility of it becoming a benifit for our land.

Wrong buddy...

A certain criminal element in our community is a fault but our society should not bare the blame for Haiti's lack of stoves and cooking gas...

If dominicans were doing the same as the haitians, the island would be a desert by now... During Trujillo's time it was predicted that by 1990 the island at the continue pace would be a desert... It's been 20 yeas since and we are not that desert predicted because Trujillo took action and started making RESERVAS to protect what they saw coming. That means our society is different and your comment, incorrect!

CF please also state that during Balaguer the police had carte blanche to take down shoot on the spot for anybody chopping down trees during the 60's and 70's and late 80's. I remember people during those times cutting down a tree was like the end of the world.

Mira unless the Haitian establish their own independent govertment and reeducate the populace with tough strong measures against conserving the environment every effort by the international community will be futile.

Mira I think it could be possible if the oversea Haitian community grow some guilt inside them and decide to help lead their country instead of trying to help from the sideline. Remember these is the same group that thinks that their guilt will go away by just rying to change some Dominicans mind into accepting the illegal Haitian by injecting racism.

man thats a way to dissect the issue. at the same time not just racism because the dominico haitian issue is a complex one i may add. racism is at the root but also immigration status.

Agree that is what we need to see from the future Haitian govertment. That and a "CHINA" policy regarding controlling their number will be the two best strategy for them in the near future. One baby per family the most.
