Leonel creates 37 new protected areas.

SANTO DOMINGO.-El Poder Ejecutivo creó 37 nuevas áreas protegidas mediante el decreto 571-09, desglosados en parques y monumentos naturales, reservas biológicas y científicas, santuarios marinos, refugios de vida silvestre, como partes integrantes del patrimonio natural de los dominicanos.

Además, el decreto 571-09 establece una zona de amortiguamiento o de uso sostenible de 300 metros alrededor de todas las unidades de conservación que ostentan las categorías genéricas de la Unión Mundial para la Naturaleza; dispone la realización de un inventario nacional de varios humedales y crea una franja de protección de 250 metros alrededor del vaso de todas las presas del país.

De acuerdo a una nota informativa, la media busca garantizar la conservación del patrimonio natural y cultural de la nación, la estabilidad de su sistema ecológico, la protección de las cuencas hidrográficas, la producción de agua, la prevención de desastres naturales y moderación del cambio climático.

Las nuevas áreas protegidas son la Reserva Científica La Salcedoa, ubicada en el firme de la Loma El Peñón del Nuevo Mundo ; Reserva Científica Dicayagua, una muestra muy singular de cactáceas epifitas sobre especies arbóreas ribereñas; Reserva Biológica Sierra Prieta ; Reserva Biológica Loma Charco Azul, una muestra representativas del bosque seco y del bosque transicional de las laderas septentrionales de la Sierra y Parque Nacional La Española, para conservar el inmenso patrimonio cultural del Sitio Histórico La Isabela.

También, el Parque Nacional Saltos de la Jalda, en el municipio de Miches; el parque nacional El Conde en la Presa de Valdesia y su entorno; Parque Nacional La Gran Sabana, en la inmensa llanura del Valle de Neiba; Parque Nacional Anacaona en el oriente de la Sierra de Neiba y los cortes; el Parque Nacional Luis en la loma La Tachuela y su entorno oriental y el Parque Nacional Aniana Vargas, en el pie de monte de la Sierra de Yamasá, así como los linderos meridionales de la gran llanura del Valle del Cibao Oriental.

Además, el Parque Nacional Ámina, que abarca las montañas de pequeña elevación que discurren paralelas al valle del Cibao Occidental o el pie de monte de la Cordillera Central; el Parque Nacional Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó, para conservar la única porción de la Cordillera Central que toca el Mar Caribe y el Parque Nacional Baiguate, con el propósito de conservar las alfombras de pinos y los bosques de galería (mixtos y latifoliados) que se conjugan en el curso medio de este río.

Otras áreas protegidas creadas son el Parque Nacional Punta Espada en el litoral oriental de la isla, donde culmina la gran Llanura Costera Oriental del Caribe; el Monumento Nacional Salto de Jimenoa, en Jarabacoa; Monumento Natural Saltos de Jima, el Monumento Natural El Saltadero, en Cabrera; Monumento natural Salto de Socoa, en Monte Plata; Saltos de la Tinaja,en la Cordillera Septentrional y Las Marías,de la Sierra de Neiba y contiguos a la carretera Galván – Neiba.

También, el monumento Natural Laguna Gri-Grí; el Monumento Natural Manantiales Las Barías; Monumento Natural Salto Grande; La Ceiba y Punta Bayahíbe.

El decreto igual dispone la preservación de los Santuario Marino Arrecifes del Sureste; Marino Arrecifes del Suroeste y de los Refugio de Vida Silvestre Laguna Mallén; Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gran Estero, así como del Área Nacional de Recreo Boca de Nigua.

Más detalles de las nuevas áreas protegidas serán ofrecidos este viernes en el acto que encabezará el presidente Leonel Fernández en la apertura del parque Aniana Vargas, la unidad que más riquezas naturales y originales aporta al Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas del país.

SANTO DOMINGO-The Executive Branch 37 new protected areas created by Decree 571-09, broken down into parks and natural monuments, scientific and biological reserves, marine sanctuaries, wildlife refuges, as integral parts of the natural heritage of Dominicans.

The new protected areas are the Salcedoa Scientific Reserve, located in the firm of the Loma El Penon the New World; Dicayagua Scientific Reserve, a very unique sample of epiphytic cacti on riparian tree species, Sierra Prieta Biological Reserve, Biological Reserve Loma Charco Azul A representative sample of the dry forest and transitional forest of the northern slopes of the Sierra and Spanish National Park to preserve the immense cultural heritage of the Historic Site Isabela.

Also, the National Park Khaldah breaks in the municipality of Miches, the national park El Conde Valdesia Dam and its surroundings, Parque Nacional La Gran Sabana, in the vast plain Neiba Valley National Park; Anacaona in east of the Sierra de Neiba and cuts; Luis National Park on the mound and its surroundings tack Eastern and Aniane Vargas National Park in the foothills of the Sierra de Yamasá and southern boundaries of the plain Cibao Valley.

More details of the new protected areas will be offered on Friday at the ceremony led by President Leonel Fernández in the park opening Aniane Vargas, the unit that most natural and original contribution to the National System of Protected Areas of the country.

Not too bad!
“300 meters around all conservation units bearing the generic categories of the World Conservation Union” That is nothing, 300 meter not enough, and it should have been at least double that amount, 600.

And then give "grandfather" status to businesses already established in that area.

I agree with you but at least is start. Who knows if we get even more later. I celebrate every little progress because politicians in DR have set the bar so low everything seens like something big LOL.
